s/o of Ferberizing. He's STTN, but now I'm not!

So, Sprout mostly STTN, but he does wake up once to eat around 2-3am. He's clearly hungry so I'm not ready to cut that out. He falls back asleep until 7 or 8am.

The problem is that I can't go back to sleep after I feed him! I don't understand why a few months ago when he was waking up multiples times per night I could instantly fall back asleep but now that he's sleeping longer I can't.

it's a cruel joke!

  • oh that sucks, I'm sorry! hopefully it's just temporary! can you drink a glass of warm milk or something (whiskey? j/k) to help you sleep?

  • Been there! I would be tired but my mind would start racing, thinking of all the things I needed to do . . . doesn't it suck?

Have you tried any breathing exercises? Maybe some activities during the day (yoga, meditation) to help you sleep better overall? Can you DH help with the night feeding so you can sleep some of the nights?

  • How long has it been going on? I felt like after we sleep-trained DS, I had to sleep train myself so I wouldn't wake up or stay awake, waiting for the other shoe to drop. It took about a week to two weeks each time.

  • Oh, that's awful. I know I used to be an awesome sleeper before DD and now I'm not good at all. So sorry!

  • I've been there.  I think the secret is to not think about how frustrated you will be if you don't fall back asleep, I find anxiety increases wakefulness.  Tell yourself before you go to bed that if you can't fall back asleep it will really be all right so when you wake up you won't be consumed with thinking about whether you will fall back asleep.  It might help to create some sort of ritual associated with this waking.  Sleep rituals are as important for adults as they are children.  If nothing else works, try melatonin before bed.  I used to take it when I struggled with sleeping and found it very helpful.

I had thought about this too - how much did you take/how often?

I don't think she can take it if she's BFing

Definitely this.  You fell back asleep before so quickly because you were probably that much more sleep-deprived.

I just took 1 pill as I was getting ready for bed.  This was in my pre-baby days - yes if you are nursing, you shouldn't take it without talking to your doctor.

  • it's been basically since he started sttn...so a month?  we alternate nights so that, for example, I wake up for the Monday night feeding, my husband wakes up for the Tuesday night feeding, etc. so it's not terrible, but it's definitely annoying.

i'll try some relaxation methods and if that doesn't work, move onto melatonin.

Ditto this.  For each of them it took me a few weeks to not keep waking up all night long and truly STTN myself.
