Do your LOs eat fish?

Do you let your children eat fish?  If so, what age were they when they first had it and what kind of fish do you let them eat?  Thanks!

Re: Do your LOs eat fish?

  • I got her some of those Dr. Praeger's fishy nuggets at around 2. She likes to dip them in ketchup. No shellfish yet.

  • Leah will eat a fishstick or two, and loves clam chowder. That's it, though. I hate fish so I haven't tried to cook it much!

  • Griffin has had fishsticks before.  We've had fried fish a few times for dinner, especially during lent, and he seems to like that too.  He has also had clam chowder and popcorn shrimp before.  I think I started with the fish when he was around 2.

  • DS will eat fish sticks.  We gave him them right around a year (the pedi gave the go ahead for anything at that point).  I have tried some white fish if I am eating it, but he just plays with it still.

  • Jonah has had tuna salad a handful of times. The most recent time, however, he vomited it all back up. I'm pretty sure it was just a coincidence and that he actually had a stomach bug, but I don't plan to give him anymore anytime soon. Ick!

  • Adah loves tuna and salmon.  I'm pretty sure we've given her a bite or two of fried fish, but I can't remember.  I think I gave her tuna for the first time before she was 2.

  • Yes.  Broiled, fried, tuna, etc.

  • We've offered, but he doesn't prefer it. I'm no help.

  • We eat fish at least once a week so DS2 has been eating fish from about 9-12 months onwards.  He eats whatever we eat so Mahi-mahi, Tilapia, Salmon, Cod, Halibut he's had it all.  I steam, grill mainly and sometimes I have gotten GF fish sticks for him too but not often.  I also use fish to make congee (rice porridge) for his lunch sometimes so he loves fish.

  • Ellie LOVES fish. It is one of her favorites. We have tilapia fairly often and she eats a whole fillet. Shrimp is probably her favorite food, so she eats that a lot too. We took her to Red Lobster during their endless shrimp special one time and that kid put the shrimp away. She also has had crab and enjoyed it. She is a fairly adventurous eater though.

I think we probably gave her first around a year. I really can't remember with shellfish ... maybe around the same time? It was whenever the pedi gave us the go-ahead, and I'm pretty sure she tried shrimp before she tried peanut butter, which we gave her at about 18 months, so before that.

  • Eli doesn't normally eat fish, but occasionally he'll eat some if we are (usually it's cod, although H likes salmon too).  BUT he LOVES LOVES LOVES shrimpies!  He's eaten those since about 18 months or so.

ETA: I forgot until I read through the other posts.  He also like tuna salad and if we have tuna noodle stuff he will absolutely scarf that down too.

  • We have offered tilapia, fish sticks, tuna in casserole form, shrimp. She liked the baked tilapia with lemon and herbs on it. She would not eat the casserole. She was so so on the fish sticks. She seemed to be okay with the shrimp. She was around a year for plain white fish like tilapia but a bit older like 18months for shellfish.
  • We love fish, and eat it 1-2 a week.

Both boys love Salmon and Tilapia, especially.

I have never tried Tuna, and we have done fish sticks once or twice.

Oh, and popcorn shrimp everyone in a while.

  • Katelyn has always tested negative for fish, so I am tempted to give it a go!  Do you worry about the mercury levels?  I am probably being too paranoid!

  • The same fish with high mercury are the ones that you are to avoid in pregnancy: swordfish, tilefish, king mackeral.
  • Justin LOVES tuna.  He would eat it every day if I would let him.  He won't eat any other kind of fish, though.

Tyler will eat fish sticks, but turns his nose up at tuna.

I asked the pedi about mercury levels, and she said as long as he is eating it 3 or less times per week, it should be fine.

  • DS loves fish sticks and popcorn shrimp.  He will also eat salmon.  I make these potato cod cakes and he gobbles them too.  We started sometime between 12 and 18 months....I don't remember!
