problems with change

When we came home from christmas, Charlie refused to let me put any of his stuff in his room. He mostly got books, plus a stuffed snake and a brobee pillow, and when I tried to put the books on the shelf and the snake and pillow in the animal basket he totally freaked out at bedtime and wouldn't stop screaming until I took them back out of his room. I've been slowly sticking things in there, but he always notices - for example, I hid the stuffed snake at the bottom of the basket, but then a few weeks later he was playing with the stuff on top of it and found it and insisted that it leave his room before bedtime.

The latest issue is two Yankees pennants and a Bearcat hat - I put the pennants up on his wall, which he was ok with, until bedtime, when he wanted me to take them back down. The hat I tried to be tricky with, I went in while he was playing downstairs and stuck the hat up with the others, in the back, where you can barely see it. Of course, he saw it. That had to go, too.

Anywho, has anyone successfully overcome this issue? It wouldn't be a big deal, but this stuff is just sitting in our living room (and has been since christmas) and it just doesn't need to be there. The clutter is driving me batty.

Re: problems with change

  • Could you try to give Charlie the job of finding the new things a home?  Maybe if he put the pennants up, or decided where they should go he would be ok with it?

He did, I let him tell me where they should go, even though their location offended my decorating sensibilities ;)

I'll try letting him find somewhere for the other stuff to go, that's a good idea. As long as the home is in his room!

  • Eli loved his monkey big boy room, but then one night decided he was scared to death of monkeys, so I can kinda relate, in that at 2AM the last thing you want to be doing is undecorating a monkey room to remove all traces of monkeys!  Although I think ours was more a nightmare/terror than change.  So I am probably no help.  We just stuffed it in the closet until he was ready to accept some of it.  FWIW he still does not have his curtains up and we have to have the bedspread on the nonmonkey (green polka dot) side for bedtime.  One night I put the green side up and folded over the top a little.  You couldn't see the monkey but you could see the blue and OH LORD did he pitch a royal fit when he woke up thinking the monkey side was up!  And we had to wait like 6 months or more before anything monkey went back in, so it was a LENGTHY wait.

I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at this, only because that's EXACTLY what we're dealing with here!

Charlie is certainly becoming a little boy! He grew out of his 2T pants what seemed like overnight Crying

Yeah... Eli was in 4T for about 5 months and now they are way too short... but the 5Ts waist is huge, but he needs the length.  I cannot believe how big all our kids are getting!
