anyone sell kids clothes to a consignment store?

We have 13 (thirteen!) plastic bins of kids clothes stored in our attic. It's a little bit out of control. Most of the clothes have been worn only a few time, and some not even at all. With Avery being the first grandchild on both sides, the family went a little nuts the first couple of years with gifts. We've since dialed it back a lot. Anyway, I'm curious as to whether anyone's even sold clothes to consignment stores or on CL. Most of the clothes are Gap, Janie & Jack or from Nordstroms. I'd really like to clear out the attic and making a few bucks to put away for vacation would be great. Suggestions? Thanks!

Re: anyone sell kids clothes to a consignment store?

  • I did one time and never would again.  I think I made $50 for a ton of clothes, some of which still had tags on them.  If you really don't care about making $, then it is probably the easy thing to do (which is why I did it).  Also, they would probably only accept summer items from you right now.  You'd have to take the winter stuff in probably Sept.  Now, I have people with younger chidren that I just give it all away to.  If you want to make some $, then post on ebay.
  • Thank you for tell me about your experience. That's kind of what I was afraid of. In that case, I'd rather just donate them to be honest.

  • I have been selling some old baby clothes to a consignment store. They only take the good stuff, but in my experience, I can get just as much $ from them as I would with a garage sale (everyone wants stuff CHEAP at garage sales) without the hassle of a garage sale.

If you're just looking to clear out a bunch of clothes without having to pick & choose what a consignment store might take though, you might just want to go the donation route.

  • I look at it as being able to get the same or more than I would at a garage sale without actually having the sale.

  • I just started taking stuff to consignment stores, with four kids, we have quite the collection of baby clothes and now that we are done having kids I'm ready to clear out the basement. To me it's worth not having the hassle of a garage sale. Most of my girl clothes have been worn by 2-3 of the girls. My boy clothes only DS has worn, so they are in decent shape. I just gave my MIL 2 more large bag fulls of infant boy summer clothes, I'm interested to see what I get for it. The first batch she took in was girl stuff, some of it wasn't in season so they didn't take it, but I made $40, which will be a start towards their Easter outfits.
  • I find it to be better than CL but I find CL sucks now but used to be great.  I would find a slightly higher-end consignment shop and call to see what they are taking and when they will take the next season and if they require hangers then separate the clothes into seasons and bring them in.

  • I wanted to add the place I usually sell at does not charge a consign fee and they give 50%, so for example they will sell Gap jeans for $8 so I make $4, not all of my stuff sells for that much and I certainly do not make a fortune but I like the extra pocket money and it gets out of my house but most of my stuff goes to friends, I sold a lot of toys and gear too.

  • My SIL just sold several tubs of stuff to Once Upon a child and made $250....totally worth it for that IMO....
