Embryo adoption?

Has anyone considered embryo adoption (from either side - considered adopting embryos or donating embryos if you have any frosties left over down the line when you're done) or know anything about it?

We have had someone offer us their frozen embryos.  She used donor sperm and had IVF as a single mom resulting in the birth of her daughter.  She has completed her family and now wants to donate her embryos.  She already donated to another family who had a successful pregnancy and now they have a daughter as well - the two daughters (who are biological siblings) know each other and are growing up as friends.  I think that's amazing (and super awesome that the two will have someone in their future to whom they have a genetic link).

Anyway, my first reaction was no not interested (mostly jsut because I didn't know anything about it) but as I have thought about it the idea has grown on me.  For DH and I, the financial aspect of all of this drives our decisions a great deal (any ART is OOP for us and if we do move on to adoption it costs $30k or so).  I am thinking that embryo adoption would probably be much more affordable than IVF (and certainly more so than infant adoption). Do you think that's the case?  I assume it would be comparable to FET.  Anyone know what that costs?

Any general thoughts on embryo adoption?  It's nto something we had even thought about so I don't know where to even start thinking about this.  Would you consider it? Have you considered it?

Re: Embryo adoption?

  • We've been thinking about it lately as well. DW and I are both in agreement. We want a baby. We don't care if it's purple. It's only going to have one of our DNA's anyway, neither of us mind if it doesn't have either of our DNAs. We just want a baby. It would be OUR baby, regardless of how it came into our lives.

With that being said, I haven't done the research, so nothing to help there.

  • I know that someone on here was doing Embryo Adoption, but for the life of me I can't remember her sn.  You may want to ask on PAIF and SAIF as well.

I believe an Embryo Adoption should be must less expensive than a fresh IVF cycle.  It would be like doing a FET.  You would probably take Lupron to suppress you from ovulating, estrogen to prepare your uterus and finally progesterone.

    Good luck!

  • We considered it--we have MFI and would need IVF/ICSI to get pregnant with our own biological child, and like you we are OOP.

A couple of things to be aware of--you need to have a legal contract with the woman who is donating the embryos, stipulating that any children born are completely yours, etc. It's a relatively new field so not all lawyers are in agreement about what those contracts should look like. Some states have different laws about embryo donation--my state stipulates a psych eval, for instance. As far as hospitals are concerned, the woman who gives birth to the baby is the mother, so no adoption papers are necessary.

Since you have somebody who is willing to donate their embryos to you, you've cleared the major hurdle involved in the embryo donation process--normally people are on a waiting list for a while, because the number of couples who want donated embryos is greater than the number of available embryos.

As far as the RE is concerned, once you have your legal paperwork in place, those embryos are yours, and they would proceed with a typical FET. It is a lot less expensive than a fresh IVF cycle--generally around $5,000-6,000.

    Good luck, whatever you decide!

  • I think it's a great option, it's just that it's largely unavailable.  Since you have someone you know who is willing to do it I would certainly look into it.  The other ladies had some good suggestions.
