While I was pregnant, my grandmother passed away. We were very close and I would love to use her name. Only problem is I don't like it at all. Other than using it as a middle name, can anyone think of a variation of Marjory? TIA!
Sorry about your grandmother. Why not something like Mallory or Margaret, or anything beginning with an "M"?
We're naming our baby (middle name or maybe hebrew name) after my grandmother. He name was Harriet and I don't want to use that actual name, for the same reason, so we were looking for an H middle name. Or first name, but we didn't like anything.
I'm sorry you lost your grandma! I really wanted to honor my grandma as well, but her name (Rita Rae) didn't do much for me. We went with her maiden name (Anderson) in her honor and to also honor my great grandparents. Could you find a link like that to your grandma? Her maiden name, her middle name, her last name....anything?
I don't think you should use Marjory if you don't like it at all, but I also don't tend to feel like shortened/changed versions of names are all that honorable. It's like "oh, I love that person but their name sucked!"

I like Marjorie. I had one in class last year and she was 15ish. Nice kid.
Marjorie means "pearl" so maybe another name that means the same or even Pearl for a MN.
Megan, Margaret, Greta, Gretchen, Lulu, Rita

Marjorie is a family name for us too. I have always loved that name, even as a little kid. People might think of it as "old ladyish" but they will get over it pretty fast once there's a new baby with that name. My cousin named her DD Edith Margaret and before she was born, I thought it was old ladyish, but now it fits her perfectly and I no longer feel that way about the name. I say go for it!!!!

We had the same problem with my grandmother's name, Erma. We decided to go with the Jewish tradition of using the another name that begins with the same letter.

I didn't know that. I like Pearl actually.
Thank you for the responses. Maybe I could think about the name a bit more. I am surprised that people like it. All the girls' names on my list are "old lady-ish", so I should like it.
I like Marjory. I also like the Pearl idea that was previously suggested. I'm a big fan of old lady names though. FWIW, I wanted to name DD after my grandmother but I wasn't a fan of her name either, so we used it as her mn. I love that DD has that little piece of my grandma (she passed 10 yrs ago) and my grandpa brags that DD is named after her great grandma (his wife), but I don't have to actually say the name on a daily basis.

I like Marjory too. And Pearl. And Greta. OH! And how about Margot? That was almost my name, and sometimes I wish my dad hadn't vetoed it. You have some great names to work with!
In general, yes. We are in the wrong generation for Marjory to make a comeback. But if you use it as a middle name for your daughter, then when she has a daughter, she could pass it down as her daughter's middle name. Then her daughter will have a very fashionable middle name, PLUS it will be a family name!
