TTC after 35

Going off The Pill and resuming my natural cycle to TTC

I was on the pill for over 15 years when I went off it 7 weeks ago since DH and I are TTC.  I've had a couple of days of menstrual cramps and that's all -- no other symptoms.  I've been told it could take 2-3 months to resume my normal menstual cycle but could I be ovulating now?  Should I call my OB/GYN with my concerns about ovulation (or not) and when my periods will resume?  I'm just impatient for DH and I to TTC ASAP.

TIA!

Re: Going off The Pill and resuming my natural cycle to TTC

  • Start going for it now! I was 35 when my DH and I were TTC our DS and I had been on the pill for 17 years. My OB told me the same thing but I started Oing right away and got PG 2 months after starting.

  • I had my Mirena removed on 2/21 & haven't had AF yet.  Every couple of days I'll have cramping like I'm about to start & then nothing.  I've tried to get the doctor to prescribe Provera so I can jumpstart AF, but he won't do it until it's been 6 to 8 weeks after the removal.  If I had known that it would take this long for AF to show her ugly face, I would've had the Mirena taken out at the beginning of the year.  I feel like I'm wasting time!  DH tries to reassure me that it will only be an extra couple of months, but I'm getting frustrated.  Angry

  • Did you have a withdrawal bleed within a few days of stopping the pill or nothing at all for 7 weeks?  I stopped the pill the end of July, had a withdrawal bleed within a few days and then had a 33 day cycle. My cycles after that varied from 20 days to 29 days. It definitely took a while to get back "together".  But lots of women do ovulated quickly coming off the pill so keep having sex.  If you didn't have a withdrawal bleed, I would call the doctor after 9 weeks to get provera to jump start it (taking a pregnancy test beforehand of course). If you did have a withdrawal bleed, I would call after 60 days have passed.  Good luck!

  • I went off the pill and my first cycle was 56 days but I did ovulate.  The second cycle I got pg but it looks like I will miscarry.  Don't assume you will take awhile to get back to normal because that is not the case for everyone.

  • I was on BCPs for the last 6 years (never took them before) and got off of them last October. I have just now had my first 28 day cycle after 6 months. I have been told by many people, and doctors that it can take 6 months to a year to get back to normal. So, I wouldn't worry if it doesn't happen right away.

I'm not sure how old you are, but I am 40, so for me, it was a race to get back to normal. Everyone is different though, so hopefully you'll bounce right back! :)
