If you aren't officially divorced - insurance question

I am embarrassed to admit that I work for an insurance company and I don't know the answer to this, and I can't seem to find any information. Maybe I just don't know what to google.

Anyway, I got a bill today for some lab work that STBXH had done. We have a $600 deductible and this was the first claim that went toward it, so the insurance paid nothing. It has him listed as the patient but me listed as the "responsible party." Am I automatically the responsible party just because I'm the insurance subscriber? Bills for DS have always come that way, but I always thought that was because he's a minor and obviously can't pay his own bills. Why would I be responsible for another adult? 

I'm hoping X will just pay it. I texted him about it and got no response. I guess I just need to know if I have a valid argument if I need to call this billing company and get the bill changed over to him.

Because you're the "primary account holder" yes technically you would be responsible....BUT there's no reason why he can't pay it himself. The unfortunate thing in all of this (though) is if he doesn't pay it, you have to. You can always request reimbursement from him, and hopefully he would do so.

Unfortunately I believe you are technically responsible... but he SHOULD pay it himself.

Do you guys have a court order yet? If not, I'd put something in there along the lines that you'll keep him on your insurance until he divorce is finalized, but he'll be responsible for his usage.
