San Diego Babies

OBGYN recommendations?

Hello San Diego!

I'm moving to San Diego (Del Mar area) at the end of the month, and I'm wondering if you know a good OBGYN.  I'm also looking for an RE for my fertility issues.

Thanks!

Re: OBGYN recommendations?

  • My Ob/Gyn is Jonathan Dunn at the Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley, which is right next to Del Mar. I really like him and had a great experience with the staff, too.

  • Mine is Dr. Vivian Ellis - also Scripps Carmel Valley - I think she is chief of obstetrics.  I really like her & love her nurses.

Scripps Carmel Valley delivers at Scripps La Jolla - it has a level 2 NICU staffed by Children's Hospital, & private rooms.  Almost all nurses are certified lactation consultants.  I delivered my 1st their and had a wonderful experience.

  • My OB is Denis Tarakjian M.D. with Sharp Rees-Stealy on Health Center Dr., and I delivered at Sharp Mary-Birch, which is next door. He wasn't on rotation to deliver my baby, but he was great throughout my pregnancy. He has alot of experience but is not old-school, and made sure that we felt that no question was stupid or a concern should not be addressed with him. I also had issues with achieving pregnancy. He gave suggestions and offered plans, testing, and ultimately prescribed Clomid, which helped me to get pregnant (and told me how to get it for free). He was patient and understanding that I wanted to try things naturally before turning to drugs. The delivery experience at Mary-Birch was also excellent-staffing and attentiveness to our entire family.
  • Thank you!  I'll check him out too!

  • It's been over a week since you posted, but I thought I'd add my two cents :)

Dr. T mentioned above IS great; he delivered my two brothers.  DEFINITELY check out the Sharp system.  www.sharp.com... It's incredible.  It's a huge medical system, but everybody (docs, nurses, reception staff, phone staff, EVERYONE) really cares about all their patients.  It's never hard to get on the phone with your Doctor's nurse, there's an after hours Nurse Connection line and plenty of after-hours care for pediatrics.

There's a Sharp office in Carmel/Del Mar on Carmel Country Rd right off Del Mar Heights.  I live in La Jolla and I went there for my OB, Dr. Chortkoff.  She's great, and her nurse Jennifer is the best.  I don't know much about the other OB on staff there, but I do know that the OB NP there, Traci, is soooo sweet.  I loved seeing her.  That office is primarily OB and Peds, with one family practitioner.

There are several other offices around the county, though, as well.

Sharp Mary Birch is hands down THE best place to deliver... unless you're specifically looking for the midwife/birthing tub experience, which they don't offer.  Check them out on that website too - they often have "Baby on the Way" nights with food, goodies, and tours.

    Good luck and have fun!!

  • Dr. Robert Biter is THE BEST obgyn I've ever met. Unfortunately, he only accepts PPO and I think has privileges at a brand new hospital in Escondido, which isn't super close to Del Mar. I do know that he does a lot of home births as well as hospital births. I was sooooo upset when I couldn't see him anymore because if insurance issues. We considered paying out of pocket to see him throughout my pregnancy... He also has a partner, Dr. Cobb, who is excellent I've heard as well. If you could, I would put him in my top 3 to check out.
  • I had Dr. Dana Chortkof with my first pregnancy.  She is with Sharp, delivers at Sharp Mary Birch and has an office in Del Mar.  I am sorry to say that I would not recommend her, in fact, I am pregnant again and am traveling all the way to Kearny Mesa from Carlsbad to see my new OB, Dr. Robert Barmeyer, also with Sharp.  He is fantastic and took over my postpartum care after Chortkof really dropped the ball after my baby was born.  She was ok during the pregnancy and delivery, but her post partum care was non existant.  Their office would not return my calls to schedule my 6week follow up and I was not even seen until nearly 12 weeks when I raised hell with sharp. I was high risk for developing post postpartum complications from preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, not to mention cesarean follow up and she just checked out.  Very disappointing.  Anyway, Robert Barmeyer is amazing.  He always calls back same day, answers emails same day and tries to be the one who delivers your baby, which is very unusual for HMO.
