My DS is 18 months old and 27 lbs. He is still RF. The specifications of my car seat say, "can be used rear-facing for infants from 5 to 30 pounds, and then forward-facing as a toddler seat for children 20 to 40 pounds." Even though he's not an infant, he is not 30 pounds yet. So am I safe to keep him RF?
Re: "Dumb" carseat question
Not dumb at all! Labels on car seats and how confusing they are was actually in one of my car seat tech newsletters that I got today
Anyway, yes, it's still safe (and safeEST) to keep kids RF until the limits of their seats. Everyone is safer RF, especially children under age 4. So, the longer you can keep them RF, the better. Your seat is one of the lower limit seats and you need to keep an eye on his height as well, as his seat will be outgrown RF when his head is within 1" of the hard shell of the top of the seat.
