The colds that just keep giving

We are a wreck in this household.  Ellie had a pretty bad cold starting at the beginning of last week, which she eventually gave to me and Noah.  On Saturday night around 2am, her cold blossomed into a full blown ear infection that prompted she and I to rush to the ER (our first such trip) to get her diagnosed and get her some relief.  She is okay now and on the mend, although the runny nose is still going strong.

Noah, who has been incredibly tolerant of his runny nose and cough, last night suddenly became very fussy and crying and had great difficulty going to sleep.  Visit to the doctor today revealed he ALSO has an ear infection.  I should note that we actually took him to a weekend pedi office affiliated with our regular pedi to get him checked out after Ellie's incident, and his ears were clear on Sunday.  But today - voila!  Ear infection.  He started his antibiotics tonight and about an hour later after his final nursing session for the night, he promptly threw up everything he'd just eaten and maybe more.  He vomited about 6 times on two different sleep sacks and three different sleepers, as well as the carpet, changing pad, and me.  Then he fell asleep while I was changing his sleeper for the third time and is just passed out totally exhausted.  I feel so terrible for him, but I hope he gets a decent rest.  Called the pedi's after hours nurse hotline and they think it is not a reaction to the medicine but possibly due to his cold and all the mucus he is probably swallowing.  He has previously had a full course of this same antibiotic with no issues, so that is a good sign.  They also said he should have gotten the majority of the medication since about an hour elapsed between taking it and throwing up.

Ellie never had any of these types of things as a baby, so this is all new and scary.  I just HATE when they are sick, I feel so terribly helpless.  I hope everyone gets better soon!!

  • We're right here with ya.  C's headed to the pedi tomorrow to check his ears.  Pretty much the same scenarios you've experienced.. right down to the puking on the carpet.

  • Right there with you.  Michael woke us up coughing at 4:30 this morning.  After a warm bottle, hot shower and vaporizor, he was good and awake and did not settle back down for Tim until after 6am.  (Mommy's morning to sleep.)  He was still sleeping strong at 7:30 when I got him up to go to daycare.  I am hoping this is just related to the teething and the snotty nose that goes with that.
