earlier bedtime?

When did your LOs start going to bed earlier?  DS goes down at 10/10:30 and usually wakes up at ~1 and 4/5 and up for the day around 7:15 (thank you DS #1).  He cluster feeds from ~7 pm on and tends to comfort nurse and doze at the breast more than anything.  I'm afraid he'll be up for a long period in the middle of the night if I put him down earlier.

Re: earlier bedtime?

  • Our LO is almost 5 weeks, and around 2 weeks we started a bedtime routine. We turn the lights down, put her in a sleep sack, and nurse her around 7:45 or 8:00 and then rock her to sleep (or until she's almost there) and put her in her rock n' play for bed. It took her a few nights to adjust, but now she sleeps from then until 3am or so, and then again until 7 or 8am. I noticed I got longer stretches as soon as she got used to going down early. I normally nurse every 2 hours, but the last two feedings I do only 90 min apart, and then let her nurse for about 10 minutes longer for her bedtime feed so she's stocked up. It seemed to work for us!

  • My LO started going to bed at 7 around 2 1/2-3 weeks old.  It started with us having to let him CIO but he only cried for an hour for 2 nights then about 15 min of crying the next night then down right away the following night. Today he went to bed without crying for the first time since the time change, he was the one who initiated changing his schedule so it matched the new time.

  • My LO will go down around 11-12 and sleep through until around 5 then go back down until around 8-9.  It works for us so I'm not messing with it.

  • LO usually goes to sleep between 7-8pm and stays asleep till 3 am. Then she sleeps from then to 5 am.Then from 5am to 8 or 9am.

We started a night time routine. Bath time is around 7-7:30 then we feed her then bed time is at 8. Sometimes she goes to sleep earlier and those are the days we do not give her a bath. We do not want to wake her up when she is asleep.

  • The only reason DD goes to bed early is because we do. If the schedule works for you there is no reason to change it.

seriously? you let your 3 week old CIO for an HOUR? Indifferent

OP: we're still working on it.  We just started the bedtime routine around 7:30 but we bring her down with us to sleep while we eat and watch tv, then I dreamfeed at 11 and we go up to bed.  She's been waking up at 4:30 to eat and 7:30 for the day.  I tried to put her down in her bed around 8 one night but she wasn't having it yet...

  • Thanks!  I noticed the last couple of nights that Reed sleeps MUCH better when he goes to bed earlier.  Guess we are moving bedtime up!
