How long for a cold to run it's course?

Adah is on day 6 of having a runny nose/congestion.  She had a low-grade fever on Saturday, but hasn't had one since.  She seems extra whiney and sleepy, but still has lots of energy.

I'm surprised she still has a runny nose.  Today she has lots of green drainage in her nose, too.  She doesn't get sick much, so I don't remember if this is normal.  What do you think?

  • Green could mean some kind of infection (sinus maybe) but I'm not sure that's what they would diagnosis.  I might be jaded because we have had to go to the doctor so many times this winter and every time (expect one) they said it's just viral and there isn't anything they can do.  Sorry I don't have better advice.  I hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Katelyn had many colds this winter and the doctors always said it was viral and to wait it out.  Her runny noses would last for 2 weeks.  You could always call the nurse's line at your pedi to see what they think.

  • It's probably normal. Hope she feels better soon!

  • I think up to 2 weeks is normal, but I would call the pedi about the green snot. That could be a sinus infection. Also, a lot of people have been getting pneumonia lately, so I would listen and make sure her lungs/breathing doesn't sound crackly.

  • I would be concerned about green drainage.  Sometimes a runny nose can last forever, but green drainage doesn't generally clear up on its own.  It's been my experience with each of my boys that green snot is usually an indicator of either an ear infection or sinus infection.  It doesn't always have to be associated with a fever, mine rarely run one.

If your pedi has a nurse line you can call, I'd see what they have to say.

  • I would probably call, just because of the being extra whiney and sleepy.

Strep throat has been going around here like crazy too.  I am very tired of sanitizing toys.
