Reflux?

My 3 month old (born 6 weeks early) may have reflux.  She sometimes has a hard time breathing and at times cries while breastfeeding.  She is gaining weight well (hooray) and is otherwise great.  The doctor wants us to try more burpings and keeping her upright longer after eating and if that doesn't work try medication.

Has anyone here used meds?  Any side effects?  Also, does anyone have any other tricks to make it better without meds?  Thanks for your help!

  • Luckily, we didn't have to resort to meds but we did prop her mattress up to a slight incline and that seemed to be MUCH more comfortable for her.  We just put a bed pillow under one side of the mattress.

We tried this for DD and she ended up at the bottom of the mattress lol. We did end up doing meds, DD was screaming NON-STOP. We had a couple of days where she'd sleep just a few hours over the course of the full day and we brought her in to the pedi. They tried her on Zantac and 2 weeks later, it wasn't getting any better, so we put her on Prevacid. That was our miracle drug - within 4 days, she was sleeping 6 hour stretches and actually seemed happy. She's been a happy girl ever since. My own mother called her a difficult baby during reflux hell, and after we got the reflux under control, everyone commented on how happy she is.

  • Kevin is being put on Zantac today for a one week trial.  His neo is fiercely oppossed to Reglan due to a study that showed no evidence it helped the reflux but that it did cause Central Nervous System issues.  So avoid Reglan.  Good luck!
  • LO is on Zantac among other 2 medications for reflux, and Zantac helps a LOT. I also ALWAYS have him inclined,

We had to do this and take meds - He is 2 yrs old and still on meds - try the tricks first, and if LO seems uncomfortable don't hesitate to call the pedi. We've not noted any side effects from the Prilosec.  He is also on erithromycin for delayed gastric emptying.

  • my dd was on pepcid from 5 weeks old to 6 months - it was a wonder drug - night and day change in her!
