Does your LO still use a Soothie pacifier?

I have a 10 month old, but I'm asking this board since your babies are a bit older....

If your baby used a Soothie pacifier as an infant, are they still using it? I never knew there was any potential problem with them, but recently I've been hearing that the Soothie in particular isn't good for the teeth coming in.  I bought 2 different ones for him, and he spits them out.  So far today I just gave him the Soothie (Wubbanub style with the monkey attached) at bed time....but he definitely missed it during the day and we had lots of crying.  I don't mind him using a paci, but I don't want to screw up his teeth? Is this pacifier any different from the others, really?

  • DS uses the soothie or the gumdrop ones.

  • My DS still uses one, but only at bed and he pretty much spits it out as soon as he falls asleep.  So I'm not too worried about it negatively impacting his teeth.  Like your DS, mine rejected any other type of paci we gave him.  Since we're probably going to be kicking the paci to the curb pretty soon here, I gave up on trying to get him to take any sort of paci that is supposedly good for teeth.

  • Yes, my daughter still uses the (newborn!) soothies. I'd never heard about them messing up their teeth any worse than other pacifiers...but, my daughter does have a big gap between her two front teeth. I don't know if this was caused by the pacifier (she doesn't use it excessively) or if it's genetic, as I also had a huge gap between my teeth as a child.

  • my girls use their MAM pacis only to fall asleep- never during the day.

Maybe (if this is true) try to get your LO to use it only at night?

  • No but my DD is a HUGE thumb sucker and there is nothing I can do to stop it. I have heard bad things about the teeth but it is a comfort thing and there is nothing I can do for now. I will worry about it maybe around 2 years.

  • I have no idea if the Soothie is really bad for teeth or not?? My 3 year old daughter sucks her thumb at night and during her nap, and has done that since she was about 3 months old...and her teeth are fine.  I'm not sure what the difference would be between thumb sucking and a pacifier?? Oh well....thanks everyone! Maybe I'll just let him have it at naps and bedtime for a while.  After all he's not even 1 yet!

  • DD weened herself of the paci when she got sick at 6 months. It was the soothie too! I am so glad she is done with that thing!
  • DS used the infant Soothie until 14/15months old. We tried the older ones but he did not like them. We ended up going cold turkey with the paci between 14-15months and we are paci free.

This and the Razberry, and Soothie teether pacis. But she never uses them for long and is more to soothe her teeth and gums from the teeth coming in.

  • i tried switching LO to a different kind when he was 2 days old and he already didn't want anything else...i try to give it to him only during naps and at bed. i don't think they are much worse than other binkies though.

This exactly. I think it matter a lot how much they use a pacifier. I had one practitioner tell me not to worry about a pacifier impacting teeth unless it was used during the day as well as at night.
