I'm trying to decide between getting an iPod touch and a Nook Color. I'm having such a hard time! I want something that can travel with me that has WiFi for email, facebook and light web browsing, books, games and music.
The things that I really like about the iPod are the apps, the ease of playing music, and just how awesome the touch screen is on that thing!
The things that I really like about the Nook are the size for reading/movies, the kid's books (and the fact that it will read to my kids), and the ease of loading new books.
Any advice?
TIA!

Re: iPod touch or Nook Color
Depends on what you want to do with it. If you mean the ipod touch for sure (and not the ipad) then it is very small for reading books. It's good for playing games and music, and Claire watches netflix movies on ours, but the screen is really too small for books. It doesn't have like a 3g network or whatever, like a phone does, so if you are, say, in the car, none of the internet based stuff works. You have to be connected to a wi-fi network in order to do all of that stuff. I do love my ipod though, it's fun!
Oh, and even with the ipad, to get the one that has internet wherever you go, you have to pay a monthly fee to get on the network. Otherwise you just connect it to your own at home or in public places where it is free. I don't know how that works with the nook.
I just got a Nook Color for my birthday and I love it. I wanted something that would primarily be for reading but also had internet browsing capabilities. The wi-fi on it is great, but 3G isn't an option. It does have Pandora radio on it, and you can play mp3s on it, I think but I haven't tried. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about reading on it but I like it. The internet browsing and colors are great, the only thing is that at this point it can't do Flash. There aren't the apps or games that an iPod would have but if you are going to use it primarily for books, I would think you'd want somethign bigger than the iPod. I had thought about getting an iPad, but I love the size of my Nook for portability.
my read shelf:
They are completely two different things with their own strengths/drawbacks. I don't think they even can be compared to each other as a "should I get this or this". They serve two different purposes in my mind.
If you want it for reading mostly, the Nook is the way to go. There is no way I would read a book on my Touch. The screen is way too small. Even using it to browse the internet and read articles, forums, etc is annoying at times. If you think you will use it mostly for reading, then get the Nook. If reading is a secondary, seldom used thing, then the Touch is better.
The Touch is stellar for games, music and videos. My daughter and I fight over mine. It is in use between one of us almost constantly. I love that I can downolad TV shows and movies for her to watch and for me to watch at the gym or while waiting at the doctor's office, etc.
You can only go to internet (Facebook, iTunes, email, etc) when there is a wireless signal present. So when I am at the bank, doctor's or work, I cannot access internet. I can only access internet at home or somewhere there is free wireless. So I can only use the Touch items I ahve already downoladed and installed. I cannot download "on a whim" or on an "as needed" basis. It has to be done ahead of time and anticipated.
