Awake time

My 5 week old has been awake since 8:30a and now it's almost 1. She slept for about a half hour in my arms but when I put her down she woke up- twice this has happened. . I've rocked, bounced, patted her back, rubbed her back, swayed, put on some white noise and nothing has worked until I laid on the couch and put her on my chest. I was wondering if this is too long for her to be awake. She's 5 weeks old and I am not sure she has been up this long. What do you ladies think?

Re: Awake time

  • She is probably fighting her sleep.  Just keep trying momma, she will go down sometime!  DS does this a lot and it's very frustrating.

  • DS does the exact same thing but I think that is just his schedule because he does it every day. We try to put him down for a nap but he won't do it until about noonish.

He is, however, sleeping a lot for the rest of the day usually though.

  • I go with the flow. I don't care if he is awake... he is usually happy to do some tummy time or chill in the bouncer or swing or the rock and play. He like to lay in the bassinet and listen to the music it plays and he stares at the patterns on the sides. We have time where he is awake 2-3 hours at a time and usually he goes to sleep with the next feeding.

Why do people want their baby to sleep all the time?

Probably because they are exhuasted and want to rest themselves haha. No but seriously, they say babies that nap during the day sleep better at night time hours. :/

At 5 weeks LO's sleep patterns will probably start to change some so I wouldnt be alarmed if LO is awake longer then you are used to. The other day my LO was awake from 9am-5pm and was fighting his sleep all day and then it continued into him sleeping less then usual at night. Luckily that was isolated and he was back to his naps the next day.

  • I guess I can see that but I have two other kids so I guess it doesn't matter if LO is sleeping because I can't anyway.

  • My DD has had a few days where she just doesn't want to nap.  I think it usually coincides with a growth spurt.  I bet he'll be back to his regular schedule tomorrow.

  • DD did not want to nap today, but was showing signs of being tired.  she ended up getting fussy so I swaddled her (we usually on do it at night) and rocked her to sleep.

  • DD usually has several days during the week that she is awake like this either all day or most of the day with a couple 30 minute naps.  She's done it since about 2 weeks.  Our pedi said she just may be a more active baby.

  • we deal with this from time to time as well...thankfully, it's typicall only during the day.  perhaps take advantage of the awake time and take a few fun photos or do tummy/play time for a bit....works well for us....i'll also undress ds and hang on the floor with him.

  • My 5 week old seems to like to stay up for long periods now too. But her naps are longer as well. She's currently been up since 11 and I only just managed to get her off of the boob so I can eat - I think she's entering her 6-week growth spurt. She's peaceful in her swing right now though.

I can't wait until DH's long work week this week is done so I can have some help!

I know with my DS if he stays up too long (more than a couple of hours) he'll get super cranky, inconsolable, and fight sleep even when he's tired. If he was sleeping more at night I could see him being up for longer during the day but he's not. The less he sleeps, the less he sleeps.

  • Clara was just awake for almost 4 hours straight, which is so SO unlike her.  Her eyes were heavy a lot of that time and she did doze off a bit, but she wasn't fussy or anything so I just went with it.  My dad came to visit so it was nice for him to get to interact with her a little bit.

  • I had one day this week where she was up almost the entire time between 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. She was a total bear when it came time to actually go to sleep that night.
