Reco your dishwasher detergent

I am so sick and tired of having a white film on all my bottles and nipples. I hear it is because all of the companies took the phosphates out of their detergents, but what good are they if they just take off one kind of dirt and put another on?!

I also heard the gelpacs are supposed to be better, but that is all I use anyway and they still aren't leaving things clean. I even added the rinse aid to no effect.

Re: Reco your dishwasher detergent

  • We use the finish gelpacs and love them.  But we also use the Finish dishwasher cleaner every few months.  The first time we used it - we couldn't believe the difference.
  • My grandparents used to use that kind, I was thinking about trying it.

Do you use the one with the red ball in the middle? Do you clean your dishwasher even if it doesn't look dirty?

  • We had that white film problem in a bad way. What a PITA.

We used Lemon Shine for a few cycles to get the dishwasher clean and get the white stuff off all of our dishes, then once we had rid ourselves of the crud we started using the Palmolive liquid. We use the Lemon Shine every other week, and so far the white crud hasn't come back.

  • We had this problem with the dishwasher in our rental house, so I did some online research and started using Cascade Complete gel, which people swear by. I was hesitant at first because it is way more expensive than regular dishwasher gel (it's about 6.99 for a bottle), but it is amazing and we have not had a single problem since we started using it. Our dishes come out sparkling.

Note: it has to be the specific original Cascade Complete gel, not the packs or the non-Complete type. I don't know what makes it different from the others.

  • Ditto the Finish tabs. I use all kinds, the gelpacs and the Quantum, whichever is cheapest. There's lots of coupons for them.
    image Ready to rumble.
  • we only use the gelpacs.   I didn't like the tabs or quantum ones.

And we use the dishwasher cleaner regardless.  we do not have a top of the line dishwasher so it isn't all that efficient to start with.

  • I use quantum but DH bought regular Finish tabs last time so I am stuck with them until we have used them all and they leave a film I hate that quantum didn't!

  • We use the Cascade Complete Gelpacs. We've cleaned the dishwasher once in 1.5 years. We haven't had any problems.

  • I'm not trying to be rude here, but more people are recommending their dishwasher detergent than books to read for parenting! And while posts like this are definitely helpful, this is a pregnancy/parenting board... so I would think it would be the other way around...

  • We use the finish tabs with red ball in the middle. I also clean my dishwasher every couple months by sprinkling baking soda in the bottom and putting a cup of white vineager on the top.

Everyone does dishes, not everyone reads. :)

  • We had the same problem.  Easiest solution ever!!  Use whatever dishwasher detergent you like but fill your rinse aid dispenser with white vinegar.  Your dishes will immediately look better and after a few cycles, the film will be gone from the inside of your machine.

Thanks Em... I agree 100%.... I am curious about this tho... I must have posted some things in the past to royally pissed off most people on the board...

Fact is tho, other then gtg's (which are way to big to get to know anyone on here) we all don't really know each other... There are a few clicks on here that probably know each other more and post on each other's posts and I honestly havent really made an effort to make "friends" on here that would post on my posts everytime i write one (well besides you, but we were friends before we both posted on here regularly)...

just being honest which is what this board prides itself on... no?

I haven't read a single parenting book since my kids were born.  I have a few, and I can't recommend them or tell you to forget about them, because I haven't read them.  I'm sorry you haven't gotten the response you expected on your post about parenting books.

And to be really honest, I don't think the number of people replying to a dishwasher detergent post vs. a parenting book post has anything at all to do with being part of a "clique".  Buckeye hit the nail on the head, everybody does dishes, not everybody reads.  Please don't read more into it than that.

Um, ok? I didn't expect to see this when checking back about detergent preferences. I agree with SrKate, I haven't felt a need to read many parenting books. Not being spiteful by not replying, I just don't have an answer.  But I do run a dishwasher, so....

For real? April, I like you, but I had nothing to contribute to your book post. The only parenting books I've read are Ferber and Happiest Baby, and I figured you had already covered Happiest Baby and I never recommend Ferber unless someone specifically asks about sleep training.

I post plenty of things that get a bazillion views and few replies, but I don't piss and moan about it. I move on, because it obviously wasn't a topic that anyone had a good reply to.

Everyone does dishes, not everyone reads. :)

Sadly, this is true. FWIW - I just got to (and responded to) April's post.

  • C'mon people. We are all allowed to say/feel what we want. No need to bring the claws. Let's not get defensive. That never ends well. Agreed?
  • FWIW, I think that everybody has posts that don't get a lot of responses now and then. Usually my posts don't, but I think I feel the way the others do - don't really read parenting books but I do dishes more than I acre to admit with 6 of us in the house.

AND I needed to ask because I am tired of handwashing bottles and nipples after they are run in the dishwasher because I want to make sure my baby only gets my milk and not other crap that is left on the bottle/nipple. Seriously, I have always used gelpacs (and have stockpiled, so maybe that is why I didn't notice it sooner) and I just am desperate to find something new. I know this was talked about on the news too but I missed it so I was still frsutrated with not having clean dishes.

I definitely wasn't trying to start anything. I was just wondering why nobody responded to her post and I guess I honestly didn't realize how few people actually read. I am constantly trying to read anything I can get my hands on, especially since having DS. I thought I could just figure things out on my own since I have been caring for newborns for so long, but had a huge wake up call when I had my own baby. Especially having a baby with so many issues. Anyway, not trying to keep this going, just wanted to point out that I was sincere about wondering why nobody was responding. I usually find this board very helpful for things like that.

I only handwash bottles. I don't think it matters what kind of detergent, mine always got cloudy in the dishwasher.

Parenting books? No. Other types of books and media? Yes, lots. Lots of books to my children, too.  If someone asked for children's books recommendations, I'd have a list a mile long.

What about the nipples? Oh, I remember what I started to say before and then sidetracked myself. I have only used gelpacs and the other day, there was a clunmp of white stuff in the tip of the nipple. And I totally went against being green and the environment which I love so much and bought some playtex dropins. But, that still leaves the problem of cleaning the nipples (anyone else feel dirty when I say that? haha)

Also, something else to make you all laugh and realize how ..uh...detail-oriented I can be. I remember learning once in school that you shoujld never start a sentence with "and" but I have done it a few times lately and every time I do it, I cringe a little bit.

I guess I feel like the clique reference is misplaced in this particular instance. In many other cases, sure! We've all got our posses to some extent. But generally I don't reply to posts I don't have something to offer in, even if it's someone I feel close with.

No one said anybody wasn't entitled to their opinion.  More than one person is reading FAR too much into the number of responses to posts.  Nothing nasty has been said, at all, by anyone.  I just wanted to point out that lack of response is not akin to not liking someone.  And if that's "getting out my claws" , then so be it.

Thanks TTT for trying to understand where I am coming from... When I said cligue, I also meant myself... If I see someone i know IRL has posted I try and give any advice I can.... because that is what this board is for right?....and what friends are for.... But not only myself, there is a group of girls on here that hang out more often then others, have playdates, and hang out a lot more then others... to me, thats a clique, which isnt necessarily a bad word in my book...it happens with a large group of people... there is no way ALL of us could hang out EVERY SINGLE TIME we want to have some in-person social interaction... but when there is a negative reaction to someone saying there a clique, seems a little fishy and possibly guilty to me..

Honestly, I havent been on her much lately... partially because like MrsCooley2Be, I re-evaluated my life esp after my grandfather died and wanted to cut a lilttle of the fat out of it....

I thought I would post the question today because everyone on here has given me valuable advice in the past... When I was on her more often, I barely got responses then as well, so its been a trend... I haven't said anything to Emily2Me about it either... so she must have observed the same thing about my posts... I would defend her any day as well.

Jersey- I like you too, Beer but by no means is what I said groaning and moaning... just an observation... Like with everything posted on the internet, you cannot tell inflection or  tone. If you knew me more IRL you would know that thats not my style .... And yes, I have read both of those books.

Anyways... sorry for stealing this post...was not mine and I am sure it was not Emily's intentions. ::backs slowly away from board and stays away from internet boards so I don't get reamed for being TOO observant::

I too have this issue with my dishes/baby items... it sucks, I have no solution but hand washing.

  • I just want to say that I am jealous of all of you who have dishwashers. I miss my dishwasher more than I miss sunshine. I will walk away pouting now that I have crappy hands and nails from having to hand wash EVERYTHING! Ugh... jealousy!
