Glucose Test at 8 Weeks?

I went to my first doctor's appointment yesterday.  They gave me a glucose test - drank a sugary liquid in five minutes and got blood drawn an hour later.  My doctor called me this morning and said that my results were a little higher than they like to see and that I need to do a 3-hour glucose test (eat a high carb diet 2 days before, no sweets, and fast for 12 hours before the test).  I'm now reading that most doctors tell you to fast before even taking the one-hour test, which I probably failed because I ate a blueberry muffin before my morning appointment.  Who knows how much sugar was in that.  Anyone have to do the three-hour test after failing the one-hour test and have it come back normal?

Re: Glucose Test at 8 Weeks?

  • With DS I was tested at 6 weeks for the 1 hour GTT and yes I had to fast before the test. If your numbers were not that high even after eating a muffin, and he wants you to take the 3 hour then I bet you will be fine.  Good Luck.

FTR: I failed the 1 hours so badly, that they skipped the 3 hour and treated me for Gestational Diabetes.

  • How early do they normally do this glucose test?

The majority of women won't be tested until 25-28 weeks because gestational diabetes doesn't normally develop before 24 weeks. Women who are at high risk for developing it (due to family/personal health history or previous pregnancies with GD) are tested sooner - anywhere from 6-12 weeks from what I've seen.

OP, I fasted before my 1 hour last week and my number was high. I am doing the 3 hour this weekend. I had GD with my first pregnancy and fully expect to have it again, but a good number of women who fail their 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour. Just be aware that if your 3 hour is normal this time you will still be tested again at the standard 25-28 weeks.

This is exactly how I was when I was tested at 25 weeks with my daughter. Dr told me I was such an overachiever :P

  • You're suppose to fast with a any glucose test, I'm guessing the blueberry muffin was the reason why it was high.

I hated the glucose test. I had terrible morning sickness with DD and I would keep throwing up the liquid. I had to go in 4 times and finally the 4th time when I was about to get my blood drawn...i threw up all over the room, it was horrible. They said F it and drew the blood. I hope I dont have this issue this time.

  • I failed my one hour and passed my three hour, but I'm surprised they tested you so early.  I wasn't tested with DD until later in my second trimester or something like that.  Good luck on the 3 hour!

  • Chances are that your history gave them concern that you would be at high risk for GD (that or the "quick draw" they did was concerning).  Fasting is not recommended by most doctors anymore as it gives a skewed result.  A "normal" diet, is recommended for the one hour as your body should be able to handle the sugars in the drink.  The three hour is a different story.

I failed my one hour by 1 point, and was given the option to do the three hour.  Since my grandfather has diabetes, I wanted to be cautious and did the three hour.  I passed with ease.

ETA:  My test was done at 27 weeks.

  • It's standard practice at my doctor's office - they test in the first and third trimesters.  I have no prior history nor any risk factors.  If I fail the one hour test again in my third, then I have the 3-hour to look forward to again!  :)
