Circumcision while in NICU

The neo mentioned circumcision for my LO. They said it had to be done within 30 days if it was to be done in the hospital, otherwise it had to be done as an outpatient by a urologist. Well that would be next week, when LO is 35 weeks. That seems to young to me! Or am I just being overly worried?

Re: Circumcision while in NICU

  • My friend in the NICU had a little boy. She waited until after 40 weeks gest to have him circumsized. More to cut down the risk of infection and complications from it kwim? GL

  • DS had his while he was in the NICU.  We waited until the day before he went home, which was at 35 weeks.  We didn't have any problems.

  • My LO had his circ done while in NICU two days prior to his 35th week. I wanted it done there so he could be monitored there for infection and heal well prior to coming home. He has no problems and it was completely healed by one week!

  • My sons had theirs while in the NICU. They were about 35 weeks. They didn't go home for about another 2 weeks after that. I liked it because the after-care was handled in the NICU. Either way, though, I wouldn't worry...your son will do great!

    Good Luck!

  • The drs. at the NICU/SCN said they wouldn't even consider it until he was close to full term. I am surprised by the 30 day rule at yours.
  • Andrew had his done in the NICU but he was there 3 weeks past his due date. I'd go with whatever the doctor recs.
  • My DS's was done after he was discharged from NICU in the Ped's office when he was 39 weeks.

I work on a mom/baby unit and think that 30 day rule is a weird. I've never heard of that before. Either way, I'd stick to what the docs rec. as well. As long as your little one isn't too tiny or over 12 lbs either place will be fine.

  • DS had his at my OBs after he was discharged.  He was about 6 weeks then or just about around his due date.  Not sure about why the 30 day rule in PA.
  • Our NICU typically did circumcisions approximately a week before they expected the baby to go home. Charlie's would have been when he was at 38 weeks, but I panicked and decided not to have it done after all :/

  • Both of our boys got circumcised in the NICU 2 days before they came home.  It's now a little less then a week later and they are healed.  They were 35w1d when they had it done.

  • I am a NICU nurse and we perform circs on babies at 34/35 weeks all the time. Also, consider that if your LO was born at 35 weeks he would likely not have been in the NICU at all and would have been circumcised within a day or two of birth.  If the neo is recommending it then it truly means that your son is stable and is ready for the procedure.

Overall, it is based on your comfort level.  But as someone who sees circumcisions frequently I would still do my sons circ at that age.

  • DS was in the NICU a month past his due date. His was done when he was 2 weeks old (adjusted) and we went home 2 weeks later. Everything was fine.

  • Have you gotten any support for not circumcising?  The circumcision rate in the US has dropped below 50%.  There are many wonderful reasons to avoid circumcision above and beyond your son's early start.
