1st Trimester

was hoping for more at my first appt....

This morning I went into my first appt and all they did was a urine test.  No u/s, not even a blood draw.  I go back in 3 weeks and they will do a full exam and blood but I don't think she mentioned an u/s for that appt either.  Just a little disapointed I was hoping for at least a blood draw to show beta's on track.

  • Have you had a prior m/c? Not many OB's run those otherwise, and you are still early.  Most first appointments (with u/s's) are at 8+ weeks.

  • i have not, this is my first pr.  but i'm on this board every day reading about everyone getting u/s at 4, 5, and 6 weeks, getting blood tests at 14 DPO+ and I guess I just thought that's how it always is

It's not :)  There really isn't much to see that early anyway, to be completely honest.  I had a m/c right before I became pregnant with my son, and that was the only reason I had an early u/s... all there was was a sac.  Big whoop :p

I wasn't given an appointment (to date the pregnancy) till just two days ago this time around, and I'm glad, at least we could see/hear a heartbeat.  Even then it pretty much looked like a lima bean, not like later on.  I'll probably only get an u/s at 12 weeks (for the first screening, which is optional), 20 weeks for the anatomy u/s, and later on ONLY if the OB feels it is necessary (I had them later on because of decreased fetal movement, was diagnosed with polyhydramnios).

  • Yeah, I read somewhere that the average first ultrasound is between 10-12 weeks.
  • Most OB's will only see patients at around 8 weeks, and that is why you often see ppl talk about having blood drawn.  U/S is common if you don't know when you got pregnant.  It's rare that doc's have you do an U/S prior to six weeks since there is nothing to see, usually they do closer to 8-12 weeks, if they do one at all before 20 weeks.

  • I just had my first appt at almost 9 weeks yesterday.  All they did was have me meet the nurses, answer some questions, fill out paperwork, and take bloodwork for the first time.  I too see everyone talking about betas and have never had them done, so don't worry you're not alone!  They told me next week when I see the doctor they will do an exam and an ultrasound, to get a better estimate of my due date b/c of my long cycles.  So while it was good to finally get a blood-draw, I know what you mean by wanting to have "more done".  I'm hoping next week all goes well on the u/s and I'm as far along as I think I am.

  • I had my first yesterday and it was the same way. Probably lasted a total of 20 minutes... our next appointment isn't for a couple weeks. Can't wait!

  • My first appt was the same thing.  Filled out paperwork, did a UA and talked to the Dr, thats it.  I think it was more to confirm the pregnancy than anything.

She didnt go over what I could/couldnt eat or do...nothing, it lasted maybe 30 minutes.

We scheduled a follow up two weeks out and Ill have my first ultrasound and other things then.

I am hoping that since I JUST had a pap in Feb that I dont have to have another.

I highly doubt they'll have you do another pap.  If you were due for it, they would have done it at your first appointment, it happened for me, and was pretty simple.

A lot of those ladies may be RE/IF patients.
