Has anyone had a preemie and decided NOT to take P17 shots and ended up being ok? Has anyone taken any progesterone shots that wasn't P17?
I had pPROM at 24 weeks and delivered 2 weeks later. They of course never found a reason for it and I never had so much as morning sickness the whole time I was pregnant. No one in my family has ever had a preemie. Not to say that I will take the chance, but I was just curious with all the Makena stuff happening and the cost.
Also, we already have a list of questions for the perinatologist, but I was wondering what questions you think would be good to definitely ask.
TIA!
Re: Two questions...(P17 and pPROM)
I agree with you. I will just have to see what she says. Does your insurance cover the shots? By the way, I read your blog and Andrew is just adorable and you are an amazing photographer!
My OB doesn't think I need them either, because like you, I had no preterm labor, my water just broke and DS was born the next morning. But I went ahead and got them anyway. I'd rather do everything I possibly can, even if we'll never really know if they worked or not. There is no risk with taking them. He kinda left the decision up to me though.
If you think you might want them, I would go ahead and call your Dr's office and talk to them about the cost of the shots. When I called mine, the pharmacy they use hadn't been notified yet to stop making the shots, so they were going to continue making them for $9/shot until they were told otherwise. So I went ahead and ordered a full supply that day and just paid for them out of pocket.
Thank you!
To be honest I'm not completely sure because I get them from a phaarmacy that can't/won't submit to insurance (since the medication has to be mixed together). So I still need to submit the receipts to our insurance company. So far they've only been about $60/month out of pocket. To be honest I"m not sure how the latest approval affects me, but I figure we'll work it out.
Even if we had to pay out of pocket it's probably cheaper for us than having a preemie and worth it
This is us, too. My water broke at 33w6d and we had an emergency C-section hours later due to fetal distress. I just asked my midwife yesterday if she thought we should be doing the shots this time around and after some research, she said no. Basically, the current ACOG recommendation is that everyone who has had a baby born before 37 weeks should get the shots. BUT, the shots are not proven to work if you've had a preemie after 34 weeks, and they are not proven to work (and really haven't been studied much at all) on pPROM cases where labor did not precede the water breaking. Right now I'm thinking I won't do them, but I think I'll get a 2nd opinion consult from the MFM the midwives work with. Ultimately, if you really want to do them, I'm sure you can press your OB or switch to a different OB who will give them to you.
