I dont know about anyone else, but I am going to guess that it has caused more harm to the child by taking it away for 3 years from its biological parents than her not signing the paper. I can not believe a judge would allow this.
I can't get to the comments on my laptop for some reason, but I was exploring the comments when I read this on my phone, and seems like there's more to the story. Someone posted another link about the story.
ETA: Here's the link. It's crazy either way, but glad to know there's more to the story

Wow! This really really disturbs me on so many levels--as a mother who has VERY strong feelings about birthing rights & as a social worker. Firstly it disturbs me b/c I am one of those moms who reads the consent forms top to bottom, crosses out and initials anything I dont agree with/dont consent to. If you have ever read the generic consent forms they basically take away your decision making abilities. Granted, I understand that in an emergency there needs to be someone making decisions and I trust that dr's will make the right ones but at the same time in a birthing situation--statistically there is such a low rate of a true medical emergency occuring where there wouldnt be time to ask for consent I dont see what the problem would be with needing to have say my husbands consent on any and all medical procedures. Yes it is annoying to need consent to place an IV, add meds to an IV, etc. but it is still my right as a patient to make these requests *stepping off soapbox**
I also read that follow-up article and was bothered even more-- there is no way those dr's knew of her long-standing mental illness issues and it bothers me that there was no chance given to this mother to prove that she could be a fit parent in spite of any mental illness she may or may not have had. As for her erratic behavior, uhm she just had a baby that was taken from her--add in hormones and that stressful situation there is plenty of explanation for erratic behavior. The idea that someone suffering with mental illness will be an unfit parent based solely on their dx is really upsetting to me. I've know plenty of mentally ill people who with the correct treatment and medication can parent just fine.

While I agree with you on a lot of points... My DH brother is paranoid schizophrenic. Even when he is on meds he is BSC (for lack of a better word) and off meds? I cant even go there. Either way he can't take care of himself, much less anyone else. His behavior is so odd that anyone would be able to tell immediately that something isnt right with him. Which I'm guessing was the case here. It is my understanding that the spectrum of mental illness.. Paranoid schizophrenia is by far the hardest to control with medication and the most severe.
while there is probably even more to this story.. The bottom line is.... If she was fit at all to parent, she would have her child back.

I do agree with you on several points but I think just the fact that she didn't show up to court speaks volumes. And I agree with Traycee - if she was a fit parent she would have her child back.

re-donk-ulous.
I think I'm just going to retire from reading the news and crawl in a hole. Stuff just makes me so upset anymore.
