flying

wondering if any of you have flown recently. i'm 29 weeks pregnant and going to visit my parents in texas tomorrow. is there anything you guys suggest i do? dr said i could fly no problem just wondering if i'm going to feel different, or if the pressure is going to some how make baby uncomfortable. any advice will be well taken. thanks.

Re: flying

  • I flew pregnant with DD. Wasn't any different. Maybe bring a small pillow if your flight is long or something. Mine was just an hour and a half and I was totally fine. Seat belt did fit a little different. Wink

  • I haven't flown since the end of first tri but my advice is to drink lots and lots of water. I was drinking water constantly and still felt dehydrated.

  • I've flown a bunch this pregnancy with no problems. I have been requesting an aisle seat, thinking I'd be up and down a lot heading to the restroom, but really it hasn't been any different than my prepregnancy flights. Your baby will be fine. Intrauterine pressure doesn't change, just cabin pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. I'm flying again in a couple of weeks and my midwife recommended compression stockings to reduce ankle swelling, which has not yet been a problem for me. Also, she recommended staying hydrated and asking for extra water on longer flights. Get up and walk around a bit if your flight is longer than an hour just to stretch your legs. Other than that, enjoy yourself! Who knows. If you meet a sympathetic flight attendant on an empty flight you could end up with a row to yourself. Good luck!
  • i just had a flight from NC to PA... no difference except the seatbelt is a little snugger. I highly suggest drinking alot of water. My flight was only an hour and i felt so dehydrated afterwards and i drank a whole bottle in flight.

  • I flew this weekend from Texas to Orange County and back. I was a bit uncomfortable but had a squishy pillow and also travelled with a personal lunch kit of snacks. I made sure I waited until the last minute to use the bathroom before boarding and really made sure to move my legs around without getting up. Drink plenty of water and you should be fine.

  • If it is a long flight (I had a 13 hour flight recently), my doc recommended wearing those special compression tights- helps for circulation.  Make sure you walk around every hour and drink a lot of water.  The only uncomfortable feeling for me was during turbulence, but only because I was concerned about our baby!  The flight attendant also gave me a little pillow to put between me and the seatbelt and I put another one behind my back.  Overall, it was fine!
  • I thought of something else...definitely pack snacks! I flew from VA to Seattle and there were no meals just those nasty snack boxes that you could buy. I packed trail mix and granola bars and wish I'd packed something more substantial, with protein because I was cranky and hungry by the time we landed!

  • I flew a couple weeks ago (about 4 hours) and will be doing the same flight again in another couple of weeks.  I sat on the aisle and did have to get up a couple of times but that was mostly because LO was situated on my bladder.  I 100% agree with the snacks.  I ate breakfast before I left but was starving on the flight.  I had some trail mix but that did very little to hold me over.
  • I've flown a few times, and will be going cross country this weekend. my OB said all is fine, recommendations are to wear supportive hose/knee highs, don't cross legs, get up to walk, hydrate really well, that's it.

  • a few weeks ago, i flew cross country.  i had some swelling in my ankles, which went away by the next day.  i think it wouldn't have happened if i had been wearing knee socks or no socks, but the ankle socks cut off my circulation a little.  i brought tons of snacks and bought a bottle of water before hand, in addition to asking the flight attendants for beverages constantly.

next week i have a short flight (45 minutes) in a 12-seater airplane, which often means lots of turbulence.  one of these flights that i took in february was probably the most turbulent i've had in my life, and i felt sooo queasy.  so i'm hoping for good weather next week!
