Belly button after cord stump falls off?

Hi everyone.  I haven't officially introduced myself on this board, but my little guy, Andrew, is 17 days old today.  His cord stump is almost completely off... it's hanging by a thread.  I expected that once it fell off the skin underneath would be smooth, but it's actually kind of yellowish... it's not oozing and it doesn't look like pus really.  More like the yellow stuff that sometimes is under a scab when it's healing.  Since it's similar to a scab, I assume this yellow stuff is normal, but just wondering what you found when your baby's stumps fell off?  I don't know whether to be concerned or not.  It doesn't seem infected, but I've never seen a belly button in this state before so just wasn't sure what to expect.

TIA!

  • My Lo, never had a scab after her cord fell off.  It was just a smooth surface.

  • Yeah it looks raw for a little while. Ellies fell off at exactly 2 weeks but it still gets a little crusty sometimes and she's 9 weeks old. As long as it's not oozing pus or smells bad I wouldn't be concerned. FYI I still noticed blood on her onesie 3-4 days after the stump fell off.

  • Normal...my first lo's looked like that after hers fell off.  It will smooth out soon. :)

  • DD's was actually bleeding a little and formed another scab that took another week to fall off.  Its totally normal as long as it isn't read around it, smell bad, or bleeding more than a quarter sized spot in 15 mins. its fine.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • My DD's lightly bled off and on for a week or two after the cord fell off. The pediatrician said it was normal and if it oozed to just wipe with an alcohol wipe.
  • So funny you shoule write about this. DH just got off the phone with a nurse from the pediatrician's office (first paranoid daddy moment). DS's cord fell of last night and, although I think it looks great, DH was worried about the same "yellowish" coloring inside. Mostly all I see is dried blood and maybe a little more scabbiness. Anyway - the nurse thought that what we described was perfectly healthy (and it sounds as though the ladies on this board agree). We have a check up on Friday (when he'll be 12 days old!!) so I'll let you know if they give us any more info. xoxo
