DH is leaving next month for OCS. We are thinking we will probably be heading to Pensacola for his flight school in Aug. After 6 weeks there he will head to Whiting Field. It looks like we will probably have to do a blind move. Hopefully I can at least take a look at some places online. Can anyone recommend a nice area to rent a home that is between Pensacola and Whiting Field? TIA
Re: NAS Whiting Field??
DH and I were in that area at one point, and you definitely want to be careful about what neighborhoods you pick. There are some nice ones and some very not nice ones, and they often border each other. I would suggest waiting to sign a lease until one or both of you get down there and are able to go see the place you are looking to rent.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the city of Pensacola is pretty darn big. Depending on where you live, you can still be in city limits and be 45 minutes from the coast. The best place to live and be within a reasonable distance from both Pensacola and Whiting is probably in a section of town called Ferry Pass. It's east of Pensacola Regional Airport (NE I think, although I'm not positive). It's very close to a town called Pace and another called Milton. It's in the same area as the University of West Florida, if that helps. It's about a 30 minute drive from that area to both NAS Pensacola and NAS Whiting. You'll be a ways from the beach, but it will help your husband's commute.
Your husband should be able to get a few days worth of house-hunting time (I think it's 10, but I'm not positive) so you'll be able to look at the houses/apartments first before signing a lease, but do your research before you get down there and have a list of potential places. Good luck to your husband in OCS and flight school and good luck to you both in your move!
Not a problem! If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. Just make a post letting me know that you sent a PM, since I never check them otherwise lol.
Oh, and just to clarify, Ferry Pass is actually within the city limits of Pensacola...there are a bunch of little neighborhoods within city limits that have their own names (think Harlem in Manhatten). But Pace and Milton are seperate cities.
Good luck
We just moved from Milton! My husband was stationed at Whiting Field for 3 years.
I would HIGHLY recommend Pace. I worked in Pcola and drove in from Milton everyday. It's not bad of a drive because of the interstate but Pace is JUST over Escambia Bay and it has wonderful schools and is a great area (and it bumps right up next to Milton) and the stores are cleaner, there is less traffic and it's not that bad of a drive! I like it cause it's a lot quieter than Pcola. Parts of Pcola get, ummm, shady.
I'm originally from Corpus Christi, TX, and it's a comparable size to Pensacola. It was nice to have a slower lifestyle for awhile.
Plus, there is a beautiful river not far from Pace/Milton either.
We blind bought in Milton and we loved the area too but if we would've known that Pace were the preferred school system in that area, we would've never bought in Milton but Milton is a really nice town aside from that!
Cantonment also sits on the northside of Pcola but it's a far drive from Whiting.
If I were you, I'd stick to Pace!
