Baby Names

How would you pronounce Nevaeh?

Question about the Baby Names Board's favorite name:

I always thought it was pronounced Neh-vey-uh, but I heard a mom calling her little girl Neh-Vay the other day.  How do you think it is pronounced?

And yes, I understand the ridiculousness of inquiring about the "traditional" pronunciation of Nevaeh.

Re: How would you pronounce Nevaeh?

  • Neh-VAY-uh.  Although I avoid saying the name altogether, or even thinking of it.

yep. Phonetically, the pronunciation doesn't make any sense, but that's how I would say it if I saw it on paper.  You know, if I ever become an announcer at a strip club.

The only reason I know this is the pronunciation is because they had one on Maury Stick out tongue I think that other mom is one of those tragedies where you go "What a neat idea!" and use the name without actually looking it up in a dictionary.

  • I pronounced it Neh-Vay until I was "educated" in the "proper" pronunciation. It defies the English language. I do try to avoid saying it, though. It sounds ridiculous in my head.

  • The first time I ever heard the name (coworker had a baby and named her Madison Nevaeh) it was pronounced Neh-vay.

Everytime since then, I've always heard it pronounced Neh-vay-ah.

  • I also thought "Na-vay" at first (since I did graduate 5th grade and all) but one of my HS friends used this for her daughter and she always calls her Vaya as a nickname, so she went with the Na-vay-ah pronunciation.

As an aside, does anyone else remember the girl on Survivor named Neleh? (Na-lay-ah) She was named after her grandma Helen. The girl was my age so this has apparently been going around since at least the 70's.
