LO hates carseat/car rides

My LO absolutely hates his car seat.  I've tried to time car rides for when I think he'll nap but he rarely falls asleep in the car anymore.  I've checked the straps to make sure they aren't too tight and always make sure nothing is pinching him.  Nothing really helps us.  I've thought about getting one of the carseat activity bars so that he will have something to play with/look at but our seat says to put the handle down while driving so it kind of defeats the purpose of it.  Any ideas to help make his carseat and car rides more bearable?

My LO loves his carseat, but a few times he was fussy when I put him in it, but quieted down and was content once the car was in motion.

You can get a mirror or hanging toys like the Lamaze Freddie the caterpillar or Jacques the Peacock. LO loves the mirror and the lamaze toys, they will not disappoint!

LO hated her car seat - vehemently.  Now that she's been in daycare for over a month now and travels in it every day, she's gotten used to it more and doesn't scream her head off the second I put her in it.  In fact, she rarely screams her head off to and from daycare either.  She still hates car trips longer than 10 minutes or so, though.  Anyway, I guess my advice to you might be to think about putting LO in the car seat every day and taking him for a car ride.  Every day.  Maybe he will get used to it like my LO has?  Just a thought.
