Eczema

Tell me about your kids' case of it.

Jackson started getting it around the time I switched detergents, but now that I've switched back - the eczema is way worse. It's been about 2-3 weeks of it, with 1 week straight of aquafor 2x a day.

When will I notice it getting better? It seems like it's spreading!!!!

Re: Eczema

  • Our biggest help is to hardly ever use soap at bath time, probably 2-3 times a week. Maybe cut down on the baths/ soap for a few days and see what happens? Honestly, Eva only gets a bath about once a week, and her eczema is much much less. She also doesnt get as dirty as a toddler tho :) hth!

Every child and person responds differently.

Aquaphor didn't work on Max. What did was a warm (not hot) bath every night, no soap, immediately followed with an unscented lotion like Cetaphil or Aveeno Baby. His didn't clear up until we started doing this. We completely eliminated Aquaphor. It doesn't work for me either, except for chapped lips.

I hope you figure out what is causing Jackson's flare up soon!

  • We ended up taking Hayden into the doctor, and he gave us a prescription ointment that cleared it up within a couple of days.  Since they we use aquaphor after bedtime to keep it at bay.

  • For Tristen it's a mix of the cold weather, me changing detergent and him being sick.  Last week I posted about him having hives, I really think it was just a flare up of his eczema.  He still gets little spots in random places, a week later.  His face looks terrible right now, it's red and pimply due to the dry weather on the other side of the mountains.  Aquaphor works for him sometimes, it works better on his chapped lips (and redness around the lips) than it does on his cheeks.

  • We also do less frequent baths when it flares up, and I alternate Aquahphor with virgin coconut oil. I've also heard fish oil can help, so I got the Nordic Naturals liquid one at Super Supplements and give him that. It's strawberry flavor and he really likes it. I hope Jackson's is gone soon!

  • Thanks guys - I'm so glad I asked, Jackson gets a bath/shower almost every day (he loves taking a shower with Daddy). So now I know I need to cut that habit out ASAP.

Also for those (Leanne & Katie) that don't use soap, do you wash your kiddo's hair?  Or just warm water for the entire bath?
  • Granted, Will is much younger than Jackson - but for Will...

We cut out baths all together - he gets a warm wash cloth all over to clean him.  No soap.

Maybe once a week I take him in a warm shower with me just to get him used to the water.

I do wash his head with perscription shampoo, but I do it with him lying on the sink and just getting his head wet.

We have a prescription ointment for the bad, bad spots.

And I'm in love with this lotion:  Vanicream (https://www.psico.com/)  I hope that didn't get me banned.

Also - we use free and clear laundry detergent for ALL clothes and no dryer sheets for all of our clothes.

We also keep a humdifier running in his room at night.

All of this has really helped, though I'm hoping I can start bathing him a bit more now that we're avoiding dairy and peanuts to see if that makes a difference.
