What to do with scraps?

I feel like I'm asking this ALL.THE.TIME.  But I have some new fabric scraps and I don't know if they're worth keeping.  I made a St. Patrick's Day rag wreath and have a healthy handful of 1" x 6" pieces of fabric leftover.  If I ever make another rag wreath, I'd probably make a Valentine's Day one and wouldn't need the those fabrics... so... what should I do with them?  It would be really fun to make a 12 months quilt... each block a different themed month... and I could use them for that... but when the heck would I get to that?  Anyone have ideas?  Or want them??

Re: What to do with scraps?

  • If you stuff stuffed animals with scraps instead of traditional stuffing, you have fluff free toys.  No fluff to inhale or eat- I think this is especially good for knit or crochet toys since they are more porous.

  • I'm not quite that talented.  Most of my sewing ventures have been 2-D. I did use some fabric scraps when I was makign Amazina dolls, but I also had an old pillow that I was de-stuffing for them.

  • hmm. You said you didn't have time to do the quilt (I totally understand-I haven't made anything new for months) but what if you did a patchwork tote/diaper bag or cape so your LO can play wizard or superhero or something like that later.
  • I have several other large-ish projects to get to first.  I was supposed to make a quilted tote for my MIL for Christmas and I don't even have all of the pieces cut (partially because I'm a little short on fabric for it... which makes ZERO sense).  And once that's done, I need to figure out what to do with MY quilt... and start a quilt for DS's big boy bed...

  • sounds like you've got your plate full on projects.  I tend to keep stuff around too long saying 'oh I'll get to that eventually' and I never do.  I just can't bring myself to get rid of supplies though.  If you wanted something super quick you could make a patchwork bib.  My mom just made a bunch for DD and just sewed 2 layers together with diaper fabric in between.  Good luck on those quilts though!
  • I have a small box I keep all potentially useful quilting scraps in for use later. That way someday when I need something to make a quilt, I have a box to dig through. I don't usually keep anything that wouldn't be useful for making a quilt though (no odd shapes, weird sizes, etc).
  • Can I just say that the best thing I ever did was take my quilt in to have the quilting done by machine? I can hand quilt, but I am not the best and I hated that I would be practicing on my piecing work that I spent so much time on. Stupid, I know. I don't care for, but have resorted to tying quilts, but the ones I took in, came back all pretty and perfect AND DONE! Binding it was a pleasure and the quilting is much more secure. I thought I would be sad that I didn't do all of it, but I was so excited to have it done, it just didn't matter.

You just sew the strips into strip 6X6 blocks and keep them for the 12 month quilt you were talking about. You could sew some end to end to get pieces long enough to make a very scrappy log cabin quilt. That would be cute as a 12 month quilt also.

If I wasn't going to do that, I would probably toss them or put them in a baggie/use one to tie together and donate to a thrift shop, maybe someone else can use them.

  • How about a mini wreath?

  • if you don't want them you could always sell them.  Either on here or on HC.  ;)
