5k Advice

Usually a lurker, but I have a question.....I am getting ready to run my first 5K in a few weeks. (I've run that distance plenty of times, just never in a formal 5K)

The running isn't a problem - I've had to slow down my pace from my pre-pregnancy pace, BUT recently I can barely make it through 2 miles without thinking I'm going to pee my pants!!

What's a girl to do??  For those that have run a 5k, are there porta potties along the way?  Is that a dumb question? Thanks in advance!!

Re: 5k Advice

  • Probably highly unlikely that you will have a porta potty in a 5k.  I ran the Army 10 Miler at 15 weeks, and thankfully had porta pot's to use.  However,  when I run around the trails near our house, I have no shame in popping a squat!  If your course is in a neighborhood, or along roads/shop centers, I would just ask around when you have to go to see if you can use someone's restroom!  I'm sure they'd understand!

  • You may not like my answer, but I've finally just accepted the fact that I have to wear a pad of some type because I leak urine when I run (poise pads or something similar).  It never fails, once I go hit the 4 mile mark I start leaking (sometimes earlier in my runs).  Pregnancy can do a number on your ability to keep the urine in and I've found that kegels have only been able to help me a little bit.  I'm hoping this probably will get better with time, but I'm not counting on it at this point.

  • Yep, I figured pad was unfortunately the way to go....I was hoping one of you out there had some type of magical response!

    Thanks!
