Baby Names

Augusten

Opinions on this name?

Considering it if I have a boy (Team Green).

I like the name August but am concerned about it becoming popular as a girls name, even though historically it is the German form of Augustus and has been used for years for males. I dont want my son to hate his name because there are girls with his name also.

Augustus is a little too much , Augusten seems a little more laid back.

I know these names in general may be a little too "different" for most, but as you can see from my siggy, I am not into common names.

thanks!

Re: Augusten

  • Not a fan. Reminds me of the brat from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, even though he was Augustus.

It's weird that you have a distinctly Latin based name, a distinctly Gaelic name, and Augusten is distinctly German. There's nothing wrong with that, but it seems you don't have a particular style- I don't even know what to suggest for you :0)

  • I like it. It is a family name for me so it is on our list of middle name options.

I prefer the spelling Augustin though.

  • While I don't like Augusten, I love August. It is high on our list for a boy. I have never met anyone IRL named August (boy or girl) but there are a few August's in literature and they are all boys. I would go for it! Original, not popular, strong, classic...you can't go wrong! Also, the nickname Augie is pretty cute, though nms.

  • Do not like it

    I love august or augustus

i have not seen any female augusts

  • Just to ease your mind, August was a male name by a factor of 6:1 in 2009 (i.e. 6 boys named August for every girl named August). In 2000, the ratio was 3:1, so it may be getting more masculine in usage.

I prefer August or Augustus.  I also don't like how the -en ending you're proposing sounds with your son Lachlan's name.  I've never heard of a girl named August so I'm not sure how relevant of a concern this actually is?

  • My husband surprised me by suggesting this one today.  I like it a lot.  It might not be everyone's style, but there's nothing weird or silly or boyish about it.
  • Thanks for the great feedback so far. I guess maybe I am overthinking it and should go with August (my preference). I really love it.

To pp who mentioned my different styles in naming my current children - I am trying to represent the blend of ethnicity/culture between my husband and I in our naming choices of our children (Italian, German, Irish, Scottish). So - they will all be of a different style, to represent our blend. Also, with the 3rd one on the way I wanted to avoid two of one, one of the other type scenario so that one name felt left out in style to the others.

  • I like it! I have Agust?n and Agust? on my list, and I like most names related to August. I do like August most, though. Why do you think it's going to get popular for girls? I feel like most people know August is a masculine name.

The reason I am concerned that it will get popular for girls is because I have visited other baby name sites where people who have actually consider or named their child this name say they get a lot of "but thats a girls name".  It is listed in the boy and girl section of most baby name sites. Also, Garth Brooks named his daughter August so it is a celebrity baby name. Month names are also popular now for girls (June, July, etc.) Plus, the naming girls with boys name trend is hot now (much to my dismay).

I have gotten some great feedback and stats from pp here though, which greatly help me realize that it still is a predominately male name. Thank you so much!

  • I love the name August and we plan on naming or son August.  I think it is a masculine name and have never met a girl named August.  I also like the nicknames Gus or Augie.
