Orajel every night? Is that safe?

DS has been teething forever it seems with only one tooth to show for it. Anyway, there are nights he wakes up several times due to teething, and when I put orajel on his gums he calms down instantly. I know I can only give it to him a few times a day, and I never go over that amount, but how many days in a row can I use it? We've tried Humphrey's teething pellets and they really don't do much. I'm also weary of giving Tylenol or Motrin too often.

Re: Orajel every night? Is that safe?

  • We haven't had this battle yet.  Our LO is 8 months old with no teeth.  However, our pedi recommended giving just Tylenol and staying away from the orajel and tablets.

  • Orajel can cause choking due to the numbing agent. Motrin works wonders and it lasts for 6-8 hours.

I googled "orajel directions" and this is what came up for Baby Orajel -

Allergy Alert: Do not use this product if your baby has a history of allergy to local anesthetics such as procaine, butacaine, benzocaine or other caine anesthetics. Do not use more than directed; for more than 7 days unless told to do so by a doctor. When using this product fever and nasal congestion are not symptoms of teething and may indicate the presence of infection. If these symptoms do not go away, advise your doctor. Stop use and ask a doctor if sore mouth symptoms do not get better in 7 days; irritation, pain or redness does not go away; swelling, rash or fever develops. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose or allergic reaction, get medical help from a Poison Control Center right away. Do not use if outer blister on card is torn or cut before first use.

  • i only use it when i know it's causing her from staying asleep (she'll fall asleep and sometimes the pain will wake her right up.) i use the smartdose one so i don't use too much.  i use straight homeopathic camomila when i can tell her teeth are bothering her but that's because i try not to give her tylenol unless it's absolutely necessary.
