We're on dose 8 of Prevacid for my 3 month old (1/2 of a 15 mg tablet, once per day). He's improved this week, but he's still doing worse than he was on Zantac (2 mL dose two times/day).
If you're on Prevacid, did you have a lot of improvement in the second week? Wondering if we're going to have to go back to Zantac, but I know Prevacid works better for most people.
I have some little beads left over after every dose that I can't get into him. If I'm getting most in, that should be okay, right?? (I'm putting the 1/2 tablet in syringe, drawing up water, and then squirting the solution into his mouth).
Re: Prevacid Questions
I saw an immediate improvement after the first day.
And the way I found that was easiest to administer it was by letting it start to dissolve in some breast milk, and then while it was "mushy" scooping it up in my finger and placing it between his cheek and letting the rest of it dissolve there. I think he gets more of it this way. In my experience, the "little beads" were too large to go through the syringe and if i use a spoon he spits it out. (I hope this made sense)
E just stopped Prevacid, but was on it from weeks 4-19. We used the whole 15mg solutab. It worked absolute miracles for her. Zantac never even began to work.
If you're getting most of the beads in, you're fine. Maybe you need to move up to the entire tab? GL!

It worked better day one with us, but I had a hard time getting all the medicine when using a dropper or in a bottle of formula. I read that someone on here just holds it on their tongues with their finger until it dissolves enough. I started doing that and she got alot more of the medicine. I do break it into smaller pieces though so that there's no way she can choke. She'll suck on my finger so it only takes a few seconds to dissolve and then she smacks on it for a minute.
How are you dosing the Prevacid? For all PPIs besides Zegerid, it's extremely important that it be given at least 60-90 minutes after their last feeding, and at least 30 minutes before their next. Basically, on a very empty tummy. If you give the Prevacid while there is still BM/formula in their tummy, then the milk will start to break down the medicine before it has a chance to be absorbed into the blood stream.
Another thing you might want to consider is splitting up the dose. Because babies have a faster metabolism than adults, they can metabolize the medicine much quicker, making a once a day dose ineffective in a shorter period of time.
DD gets half of a Solutab in the AM, and then the other half in the late afternoon.
A message board that has really helped me is on Baby Center. Look for the board "Surviving Reflux". Those ladies really know their stuff when it comes to reflux and related issues. It has really helped us when our pedi/GI has unfortunately not.
I am doing it on an empty stomach. First thing in the a.m. and then I don't feed him for at least 30 minutes.
I think he needs a higher dose (maybe 1/2 tab a.m and 1/2 tab pm) but pedi is reluctant want to prescribe more due to his age. I'll be calling on Monday.
