Cloth Diapering

Cloth Diapers vs. disposable?

I'm beginning to do some research and thought i'd see if anyone here might have some answers for me!

Was curious to see if any of you ladies use them and what your thoughts are?

the Cloth Diaper research that i've done so far seems like they really aren't that bad...but this is coming from someone who has never changed a diaper before!

Anyone know what is the cost of cloth diapers vs. disposable?

We aren't on a tight budget...but if we can save money that is always a plus!

Just trying to figure out just how much easier or harder either method is...or if anyone can give me any feedback on the advantages or disadvantages.

thanks in advance!

I've been using it for 3months now and must say it's as easy as they say it is. If you have a washer and dryer at home then there should be no "excuse" to not do them...same thing as a disposable the only difference is that you stick them in the wash and that's it.  The few times i used disposables I had a few blow outs...but never experienced that with my prefolds.

  • From what research i've done, it really doesn't seem that much harder.  I'm really beginning to consider this!

    Few questions i've thought of:

would it be harder with traveling for trips?  or just do disposables maybe when traveling and when you are "out and about"?

What do you think the monthly savings would be, give or take?

Would the investment in cloth diapers be more then the investment of disposables?

would it be harder with traveling for trips?  or just do disposables maybe when traveling and when you are "out and about"?  A lot of mamas use disposables when they are out and about. We don't but we did with DD. This time around I find it just as easy to use cloth. I am pretty much a pro at it now.

What do you think the monthly savings would be, give or take? There really isn't a right answer for this. The savings is what you make of it. Depends on how many diapers you buy, what brand, etc. Cloth can become an addiction of sorts, so it depends on how much you limit yourself. Prefolds and covers= tons of savings.

Would the investment in cloth diapers be more then the investment of disposables?   I am sorry, but I am seriously laughing at this question. Not to be snarky, but think about it this way: Say you have 3 children and only use disposables.... you are essentially paying how much per box and then throwing your money into the trash with each diaper change.

Take 3 children and using cloth. You are putting up an initial investment in cloth but it quite possible to use all of those same diapers with each child. Plus, if they are in good condition then you can sell them when you are finished and still make a profit back. I don't see that happening with disposables. Wink

  • I love CDing.  Ive been doing it for over 6 months now and have NO complaints.  The cost savings is really down on the list of reasons why I do it.  Check out the health benefits of cding and the health concerns of using sposies.  That was enough for me!  Plus the enviromental was a big one. Plus they are so darn cute!!!

-For trips-not hearder if you are going on a weekend trip and can bring enough diapers for the whole weekend or if you are staying somewhere with a washer dryer. We bring ours when we go to our beach house or to visit family members because we can wash while we are there. Last year we used G-diapers on a vacation w/ot laundry facilities...this time I think we'd just do some disposables (we use nature baby care)

-we spend nothing monthly because we bought them up front (unless I see I diaper I must have!)

-Upfront we probably spent about $350 on our diapers...that would be more than enough to get us through potty learning so I consider that considerably less than what I'd spend on disposables. That being said, I recently have fallen in love with fitteds and wool which I can drop a pretty penny on if I don't watch it. Plus, you can reuse the diapers on subsequent children.
