baby & me swim class questions

We're starting a "baby and me" swimming class with DS tomorrow. I just got around to reading the rules on the website, and this is what it says regarding what the baby should wear:

  • Babies should wear only tight plastic or rubber pants with snug fitting legs covered by a tight nylon bathing suit, there is also a new ?Swim Diaper? that can be worn. NOTE: Diapers will weigh your child down and are not effective at containing waste. The Fairfax County Health Department has also made it a policy that diapers are not to be worn in the pool.
When I signed up for the class, I thought I read they should wear regular diapers. Guess not. All I have are regular swimming trunks like these. Where can I get these swim diapers? I'm checking on the Walmart and Target websites, and neither show anything in store..just online Crying

Do they sell them at the ffx co. rec centers? The class is tomorrow at 10AM so I won't have time to go to any specialty store... any suggestions? TIA!

Re: baby & me swim class questions

  • When we took a swimming class, we put DD in these Huggies Little Swimmers (which we got at Giant), and an iPlay swim diaper (which we got at Buy Buy Baby, so you may not have time to get it before tomorrow). Then her bathing suit. She looked sort of ridiculous because her bottom was so cushioned.

I'm not clear if their guidance is saying don't use regular diapers, or not to use the Little Swimmers. I would stop and get the Little Swimmers at Giaint/CVS, just so you have something, and try to get a sense of if you also need a non-disposable swim diaper.

    Have a great time!

  • we used little swimmers and thats what they had for sale at oak marr.  you can get them in the diaper aisle at most places, if you can't- the I'd call the rec center and see if they sell them.

  • Ditto PP, check Target, BRU, and/or BBB for a Gerber plastic diaper cover. Put that over one of the Huggies/Pampers swim diapers and then put the trunks on. Should be just fine.

  • Thanks everyone! I found Huggies Little Swimmers at Walmart (even though online it said not sold in stores). We just put those on and then the trunks and the instructor said that was fine. DS had a blast :)

  • We had the same issue.  I found the swim diapers but I could only find the plastic underpants in big sizes.  They were actually selling them when we got to the class, so I just bought one there, although I don't think anyone would have been any the wiser if he had just been wearing the swim diaper and his bathing suit.

This is what we do as well.

But, let me warn you about the Huggies/Pampers swim diapers - they are only designed to hold in solid waste - they don't absorb pee, so wear a regular diaper to the pool and change LO into the swim diaper/plastic pants/swim suit combo when you get there!

I was going to mention the same thing.  My cousin works at a daycare and she said many parents send their kids in with swim diapers b/c they run out of regular ones and it causes a huge mess!

Wow, if they don't absorb the pee, then where does it go if LO pees while in the pool?

Yeah, I should have mentioned that about the Little Swimmers. We learned that the hard way, and ended up with pee in the infant carrier. And, I hate to say it, but babies with Little Swimmers on are probably not the only source of pee in the pool.

    yeah, thank goodness for chlorine!

  • Babies can't wear regular diapers in the pool (or any sort of diaper that absorbs liquid) because the diaper would just end up absorbing a ton of liquid from the pool. So even if they peed in a regular diaper, I don't think the diaper would do much good!

  • You can get the iplay one on amazon, but even with their 2 day free shipping....that won't help for tomorrow:( BTW, where are you taking classes?
