Daycare

If you're planning on sending your baby to daycare, will you use a center or an in-home daycare and why?  When will you start researching one?  TIA!

Re: Daycare

  • We will be using the daycare at my hospital. It's nice, because it's right on campus, and I can go and bf whenever I want. Plus, the weekly fee is payroll deductible. We gave our deposit a few days ago, but initially contacted them when I was 8 weeks (I'll be 15 weeks tomorrow). When I gave my deposit a few days ago, there were only 2 spots available for infants in October, and I just took one of them. I heard it was best to start looking as soon as you can, because there may be waiting lists. I'm glad I didn't wait, or I probably would have been put on a wait list, and not had a spot. Then we would have had a big problem.

I am hoping for the daycare at work. There are not many around here that I liked. This place was really clean and they really focused on development/education. I can also stop by at any time and visit/bf. I got on the waiting list around week 6 or 7, I think.

I'm also using the daycare at my hospital.  They are wonderful.

I've heard great things about the daycare at my hospital. I went on a visit last week, and I love it. They have 3 dedicated infant rooms that have no more than 7 infants with their own cribs per room, and no less than 2-3 caretakers per room. They also have a focused education/learning schedule, which I love. I'm happy that (not at first, obviously, but eventually) my child won't be sitting around staring at the other children, doing nothing.

  • I'm going to be using the daycare at the school I work at. I've heard wonderful things from other teachers who send their kids there.

  • I haven't completely decided about in-home versus center. I already have a list of places to see, but haven't started visiting yet. Probably next week.

  • Thanks ladies!  I talked to a lady that has an in-home daycare today that the teachers I work with recommended.  I liked her a lot, but am not sure if I would prefer a center...  I am going to look at both.  Cost is also a concern especially for DH.  I just want the baby to go somewhere that I feel comfortable with and trust the caretaker.
  • I'm fortunate enough to have a friends who's mom has been doing home daycare for years and another friends 2 kids both went there.  So provided she has an opening when the time comes, we will probably have our LO going there.  Its about $100 less per week then the local center based daycare in our town.  We're also hoping to only have to have LO in daycare 4 days a week and have my mom watch for the 5th day.

  • I'm planning to use the daycare at my school, but I haven't reserved a spot yet and after reading these posts am kind of freaking out that maybe there won't be a spot. I worried that asking around at the day care might get back to my bosses before they found out from me.

When you were put on a waiting list or reserved a spot with your work daycare, did this come up at all, or had you already announced?

  • I think we are going to use a center. I have researched a couple and they both have webcams where parents can see what the baby is doing while they are at work, serve lunch and 2 snacks, and are accredited by nacye.  One is also a montessori based daycare which is great because I would love to eventually send him or her to montessori schools.  The one thing that is bothering me is the cost. Over $1000 a month for an infant.  I honestly didn't know daycares were that high. I have started researching now because some places get full quickly and have waitlists.

Unless someone saw me walk into the daycare at work, no one would have known.
