Baby Names

S/O Aoife - I met one (long)

I met my first one at the Wintergrass festival a few weekends ago. She has the most wonderful singing voice and is in one of my favorite bluegrass bands. Just for fun I thought I'd show you the names of the people in the other bands.

All in all, pretty average and obvious names. I did run across a few that stood out though:

Aoife O'Donovan - vocals
Sterling Abernathy - guitar and mandolin.
Eric and Leigh Gibson - brothers and vocalists.

Another set of brothers are in a band called, Schythian. The names seem pretty international, and I haven't run across them before: Alexander and Danylo Fedoryka. They have a bandmate named, Josef. Their tagline is "the immigrant road show".

Linzay Young (male), Chas Justus, and a Glenn Fields in the same band.
Kendl Winter - banjo
Jes Raymond - guitar
Ru Searson - ?
Charmaine "Lady Li-Lei" Slaven - (too many to list, but she's from Montana and the band's name is Squirrel Butter)
Thea Wescott - songwriter/guitar (her name didn't stand out because it's different, but because I don't see it all that often)

Aoife is probably not a stage name. It is Gaelic, very traditional Irish name. Met quite a few Aoife's when I lived in Ireland.

I've rarely seen stage names in the bluegrass world, and technically Lindsay is a masculine name that turned feminine a few decades ago (70s I think). The bearer was older, so it could be that his parents chose the cre8iv route, but the name was still completely masculine at the time he was named.

  • I love Aoife! It was on my shortlist a long time ago. Now it is off the list completely. :(

I was named after a male Lindsay. It used to be much more popular for men.

Lindsay/Lindsey is one of those last names that became a popular male first name, that eventually went to the girls around the same time Ashley went pink.

    Edit to address OP!

Braveangel, how was the festival? Was it an outdoor music thing? Sounds like my cup of tea. Upstate NY has the Grassroots festival (way East of me), I figure it's similar? Hope you had fun!

It was awesome! My guy worked for two days of it and E and I went roses him on one of the days. She looked darling and when she found the stairs, she was happy as a clam. It used to be in an older hotel but last year it moved to a new one, so almost all of the shows were in ballrooms (our weather sucks in February). They had a late show at a local restaurant but everything else was on-site. We met so many nice people and I got to see Crooked Still live for the first time. There's a good mix of old grass, new grass, folk and funk - pretty much anything that can be played with an instrument that you can carry. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the line up was similar to yours...so many of the groups travel a lot of the year.
