High risk ob vs regular ob?

So I graduated from my fertility office and they told me to contact my regular OB for an appointment. I was not very excited to contact them because the lady was like "Oh wow you are having twins! And you are coming here?" She sounded really surprised. I have a couple other friends that have/had twins and they all went to another office that was a high risk one that is used to seeing multiples more. I would love to just go ahead and go to the high risk one.. I feel like my regular ob does not see these as much.. does this sound ridiculous? I have an appointment with each one but not sure what to do..

Re: High risk ob vs regular ob?

  • I saw my regular OB and a Maternal Fetal Medicine (high risk) dr., which is what most of the MoMs on here have done.  Usually MFM dr do not deliver.  The MFM will do detailed scans usually every 4 weeks or so to make sure that everything is okay with the babies and your OB will care for you more so than the babies.

  • If your OB doesn't do many twin deliveries, I'd recommend going with the high risk one.  My OB happens to do a lot of the twin deliveries in the area and is comfortable with twin pregnancies.  From what I've seen in this board, I'm having as many appointments / ultrasounds with him as most are that are seeing a peri / MFM.  So I'm comfortable with that.  But if the OB doesn't sound comfortable or if you're not, just go to the high risk.

ETA: Congrats on graduating from the RE by the way, big step :)

  • I mostly saw my reg OB...  She would constantly send all my stuff over to the peri to ask for feedback.  Every u/s I had my OB was not pleased with and she would order repeat u/s a the peri office.  One day I finally asked why i wasnt seen there all the time if I ended up there anyways...he responded with something along the lines of twin pg arent as high rish as they used to be and i wasnt considered high risk.  he said my pg was smooth sailing...(even though i was on bedrest for high BP Hmm ) i dont think he would have put me on bedrest if he was my doc.

point is...every doctor is different, my OB where i felt she wasnt a "twin" pro...she ended up being a ME pro and knew what I needed to get thru my pregnancy.

Do whatever makes you most comfortable.  If youre not comfortable with your OB...throw a fit til you get what you want.

  • I started off my pregnancy going to a regular OB, but was referred to an MFM....usually, I think, you have to have a referral since they're specialists.  I have to go to both though, because my OB will be the one to deliver, and the MFM is more for consultations (my OB calls my MFM the "thinking doctor", or "the doctor that doesn't have to get his hands dirty LOL).
