So Sick of Amoxicillin

So DS has been on Amoxicillin for a week now for what they thought was the start of an ear infection.  Well, he's not allergic to it, but ever since he's been on it he has been having several side effects.  Diarrhea every day 2-3 times a day.  Vomitting--not every day, but it has happened about 5 times in the last week.  Now he has thrush and daycare called and said he couldn't be there because it could be contagious.......I did read on the internet that it is rarely passed from baby to baby.  Probably only if they share bottles or pacis...which I really hope they're not doing at daycare.  So now I need to bring him in to the doctor to get a note so he can go back to daycare....well the thrush probably won't be cleared up by then, so I have no idea what I am going to do.  I will never put him on amoxicillin again.  There has to be a better antibiotic that doesn't have such bad side effects.  Sorry, just had to vent.

Re: So Sick of Amoxicillin

  • Thrush can becaused by most antibotics same reason women get yeast infection while taking them. An with the thrush he is more than likely going to be taking diflucan or nystatin to clear it up . DD had thrush last month . It is no fun and can make LO mouth really sore . Plus I was told to go home and was all her toys that she had been playing with and to boil all her bottle and paci's everyday till it cleared up.DD had to stay home from DC for three days when she had thrush . Question how many ear infections had LO had and is amoxcillin the only antibotic he has taken?

Yes, this is his first ear infection and amoxicillin is the only antibiotic that he's every taken.  I'm not looking forward to having to clean all of his toys every day.  I guess until it's gone he will only get a select few toys.  Argh.  I am bringing him back to the doctor today so he can get the Rx and hopefully it will be cleared up by next week when he goes back to daycare.  I swear he's been sicker on the antibiotics than he was before he even took it.

  • Thrush is a nasty nasty thing. It is highly contagious. If your LO puts a toy in his mouth and then another kids puts the same toy in his mouth they can get it. In fact, my LO would put his hands in his mouth, then wrap his army around my neck and I got it on my neck. The first time he was on amoxicillin we had the same things, thrush and diarrhea (which lead to diaper rash) which the nurse told us to give him culturelle within 2 hours of taking amoxicillin. We also limited his toys, washed the toys every night and boiled pacis and every part of the bottle daily. Nystatin oral cleared up his mouth and Nystatin or Lotrimin lotion cleared up the diaper rash. I will tell you that the next time they put my LO on amoxicillin he broke out in what looked like hives which made the Dr think he was allergic to it. Since then we have tried 3 different antibiotics for an ear infection and nothing is knocking it out. Good luck Mama and be happy you aren't BF because yeast on the boobies is no fun at all.
