Best bottles for less "choking"

When LO drinks from the bottle sometimes she chokes on the milk - usually followed by me flipping her to tummy where she whines until she burps or asks for more food. I dont know if this is normal or what. We are currently using the playtex drop in bottles but I am about to discontinue the use of these as I want somethign that I can wash rather than throw out constantly. Any suggestions on bottles that get minimal air in them when LO drinks? Ive heard Dr. Browns are good - anyone use these?

  • I love Dr Brown's bottles. It sounds though that maybe the nipple you're using has too large of an opening for your LO. She may be getting too much liquid at once which is causing her to choke on it.

  • I use Dr. Brown bottles and LOVE them. LO does choke alittle once in awhile but I think it's pretty normal for babies.

  • I like the Dr. Browns but if you do not have a dishwasher (I don't) they are a major pain with all the parts.  I was given an avent bottle when I registered with buy buy baby.  I tried it and MJ loves it.  He sucks down all 4 oz with little issue.  I went out and bought more.

  • Sounds more like the nipple you're using is too big. Can you buy different nipples with a smaller hole for LO? We've been using the Born Free with no problems. They have a similar ventilator like the Dr Browns but they are easier to clean by hand. Like previous poster said Dr Brown's are impossible to clean without a dishwasher.

I don't have a dishwasher and have never had a problem washing Dr B's bottles. The inner tube and rubber valve part take 2 seconds to clean.

  • We use Dr. Browns as well and love them...I usually hand wash the parts and don't find it to be a pain.

  • I just started using Dr. B bottles and I don't have a dishwasher either but I've not had a problem cleaning them. I also have to add, that my LO is very tiny and when I tried to use the Playtex bottles he not only choked on them but had more milk on him then in his mouth. He also sucked in quite a bit of air with them, trying to secure his mouth around the nipple. Since starting Dr. B and he's less gassy, gets more formula and finishes a whole 2oz with no problems. I love them....

  • it does sound like your nipple is too fast, try a slower nipple, if not try avent, that is what we use now, we used to use the playtex drop ins but switched to avent b/c i didn't like the measuring bags in the playtex drop ins. we love the avent bottles and they are easy to clean and my son likes them and he has reflux :) good luck.
  • thanks everyone!! we do use a slow nipple guess its still too fast!!

Born Free slow nipples are really slow, it helped our DS from eating too fast.
