? adding a pic to a post

is there a trick to adding a pic to a message...i keep getting a box with a red x...

I usually upload the pic to tinypic.com and then copy the image code and put it directly in the post....I think that little tree icon next to the smiley face icon works for pics too but I haven't ever tried it like that.
