Cloth Diapering

Using towels in the wash?

I have been having serious issues with detergent build-up/ammonia smell since starting CD.  We go back and forth between cloth and disposables, based on my son's rash.  We've been at this for probably 4-5 months now, and have tried so many things.  In trouble shooting, I have again come across the recommendation to use wet towels in the wash as I have a front-loader HE washer.  Is anyone doing this?  How many towels do you use?  Do you up the detergent?  I have also read this does not really add more water, as the towels just soak up any extra water.  Has anyone had a bad experience with this?

I did find using the "delicate" cycle on my washer allows for more water,  but "warm" is the hottest water it will use on this cycle.  Bummer.

 Thanks!

  • You can add a towel to add more weight. It also adds more friction for the diapers to 'scrub.' You can also add hot water through the soap compartment. I actually do 2 cold rinses before I add my soap. I let one rinse run. I stop the washer before the second rinse can spin out. It adds a lot of weight to the diapers, so it fills with more water when the wash starts.

  • I wet my inserts in a basin, put back in the wetbag and pour it in the wash (this adds weight to the load, then once the wash fills on heavy cycle, I add a pail of cold water to the washer (pour directly in the soap slot). I know you are supposed to let the dipes soak for half hour but my soak option spins so I have been soaking them in the basin and then going straight to the hot/cold cycle and then doing an extra rinse...so far so good
