1st Trimester

pace of weight gain?

are there any good tips for the pace of weight gain during pregnancy?  Like how much each week or each month?  I've only been able to find overall weight gain charts depending on your BMI.  I feel like I'm gaining weight way too fast.

  • I'm really interested too! We did figure out we were 9-11 weeks along which gives me something to work off of till I can get into the stinking dr.

ETA: I think this is under the assumption that you were not overweight or under weight prior to pregnancy.

  • I read in a book that for the 1st trimester you should eat 110% of what you normally ate.  10% more for baby.

  • Thank you, girls.  This is very helpful.

  • Last time I was pregnant I learnt that my body was going to do its own thing regardless of what charts I was trying to follow or predict weight gain by. Everyone is different, and so I think it is hard to expect your body to follow someone else's path - it makes it so frustrating and worrying. My best advice is to eat healthily and exercise gently and your body will do the rest ... that's what I am doing this time anyway, I spent way to much energy last time over thinking it.

I agree, before BFP i would normally go back in forth 10 pounds or so in just water weight.  as long as you arent eating complete crap, I wouldnt worry too much.

  • My Dr. said that you do not "need" to gain wt until closer to 20wks.  He said at 20 weeks you should gain at least 1lb a wk.  I try not to gain more than a couple lbs in the1st tri because I know how hard it is to loose if I gain a ton.

Yes, yes, yes. I gained way too much weight in 1st tri last time and that really set the tone for the 2nd and 3rd trimester. I think my mindset was just that I would breastfeed and do WW and the weight would just melt off. Sucks that I was majorly wrong. lol

  • Just found out about this site on another board. It gives a more detail, custom calculation based on your starting weight.

  • My doctor told me she expected I would gain about 27-30 lbs. She said 0-5 lbs in 1st tri, and about 1 lb a week after that.

  • I had severe MS with my first and lost 10 pounds in first tri. From there I gained that back and another 10 on top of where I was when I got pregnant.

Honestly it depends. My doctor says anywhere up to a 40lb gain is okay.. I think that's ridiculous. You really don't need to gain much in first tri unless you are underweight to begin with because the baby is tiny. You do however need to eat healthy because this is the time that a lot of vital organs are developing.

I think as long as you're eating healthy, then you'll gain what you gain and I know it's hard but I wouldn't stress too much about it.

  • I'm nearing the end of my first tri and I've already gained 8 pounds (though I was a few pounds under my normal weight before I got pregnant).  I blame it on the fact that I was constantly eating to fight off morning sickness.  Now that the nausea is starting to go away I don't need to eat as much.  So hopefully the weight I gain from now on will be from the baby and not the food!
