Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DS has MRSA

Last night he had a fever and two sores (pimple-like) on his bottom. We gave him Tylenol and Motrin (alternating) overnight and this morning one sore had popped. We got him into the pedi office this afternoon and it's MRSA! DH is a social worker at a nursing home and the pedi says he's probably colonized with MRSA from work and passed it on to DS. He had to have blood drawn and now we're waiting for the doctor to call and tell us if we need to take him to the hospital for IV antibiotics or if the Rx she called in will be enough. I am so freaked out. If we get to stay home tonight, I am sending DH to Urgent Care to get antibiotics for himself after DS goes to bed. I feel so bad for the little guy and so far he's not acting too abnormal, other than that he's super sleepy because he missed all of his naps today with all of the medical appointments. Cross your fingers we get to stay home tonight.

  • Yikes. MRSA is not something you mess with. I hope it is something you can treat at home. I'm sorry you guys are having to deal with this. Are they testing you as well?

  • My baby has had this twice already. My pedi says some people just carry it. He has been put on Bactrim both times and they cleared up no problem. No IV antibiotics. Just know that it could come back. i have started washing L in Dial because it is antibacterial. Pedi also suggested weekly watered down bleach baths. I haven't doen that yet, but I will if this keeps happening.

Pedi did say that if it happened again in a short period of time we would have to test his immune system to see why he can't fight it without a breakout. A lot of people carry staph. You and DH probably have it.

Thanks. I haven't been tested. I couldn't leave work because we had 5 teachers out on a field trip and there are no more subs (we're a charter school, so we have to sub each other's classes - no outside subs). My mom (our daycare) took DS to the pedi and DH left work and met him there.

So far he's on Clindamycin and needs 3-4 sitz baths a day. We're only putting epsom salt in the bath to continue to help the sores drain. The puss is putrid - it makes the whole room smell when you change his diaper. I am worried about it coming back with DH always being around people who have MRSA at work.

Dh works in a prison and I work in healthcare. We are pretty careful about not holding him in our work clothes and bathing before we cuddle. His bumps were never "putrid", disgusting looking, but never an odor. Hope everything goes well for your baby. Be sure to wash you hands before and after changing him (as if you didn't already!) and clean the tub after he bathes. Ds's always drained and closed up after about 2 days. His last bout was about 2 weeks ago (first one was about 4 months ago) and he still has purple places from them, but they aren't infected anymore.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but my Aunt had MRSA and she was always getting outbreaks. I thought once you have it that it never goes away. Also you have to be very careful about spreading it to others. Medicine can help control the sores but the MRSA is always there.

Kinda correct. most likely our LO's will always carry it. Dial and bleach baths help control the colonization and growth. Hand washing and being careful when he has a breakout are about the only things you can do.

ETA: I also wanted to add that even though MRSA sounds scary, it is simply a form of staph that when it was discovered, they had trouble finding an antibiotic that could help it. Now we have several antibiotics that are MRSA is susceptible for.

It is a bacteria (so technically it can be killed, unlike a virus), but it is very difficult to kill off. There are a few antibiotics that can keep the colonization under control. Lots of people carry it and never have problems, but some have severe issues. The regular variety of staph is the same - some are affected, some are not.

Thanks for the info. I've already scrubbed the tub pretty well. I'm just waiting for the doctor to call with the blood results.

  • I am sorry you are dealing with this.  Poor kiddo.  What are the blood tests for?  I have MRSA and have had it for years.  Most people have it and come people have outbreaks but most are able to fight it and not breakout.  It's never really an issue....I call for a RX to be called in if it's getting bad. My suggestion is to see someone who works in ID (infectious disease)
  • So sorry you are dealing with this.  I am an ICU nurse and would bet my paycheck that I am colonized with MRSA.  I never touch or hold my LO in work clothes.  Work shoes stay in the garage. Hope your LO gets better soon!
