Table Food Question

Rachel really only eats mum mums, puffs, cheerios and yogurt melts.   I give her pieces of bagel, fruit, veggies, chicken and cheese. From time to time she'll put those in her mouth and chew on them a couple of times and then she'll spit them out. She prefers to squish them in her hands, pull them apart (green beans & string cheese) or pound on them.

All of the table food I give her are thing that she will eat in purees so I'm just curious how long did it take for your little ones to catch on to eating table food? Or should I say to get over the texture thing?

ETA: I guess I'm just tired of taking time to "meal plan" for her when she doesn't eat it and it just ends up in the trash. I know it takes practice but seriously I've thrown so much away over the past 2 months.

  • After cleaning up yet another puky lunch session, I'm still waiting for him to get over being gaggy.  He still mostly eats the purees.

  • DS sometimes still gags on solids; however, he doesn't puke.

Sorry to hear you still have a Mr. Pukey McPukerson. I hope he gets better with his food soon too.

  • Aaron didn't really get the hang of table foods (beyond pasta) until he was around 13/14 months old.  Even now he still is getting the hang of some things.

  • Margaux is a pretty good eater, but she wasn't into table food much until she was about a year old.  We did kind of gradually make her purees less mushy, like smushing a banana but leaving some chunks.  Does she try to wield her own spoon?  I know using tableware gets Margaux all excited.

She mostly waves them around in the air and the purees go flying.  Or if I hand her a fork or spoon with something on it she takes it off and then puts the utensil in her mouth. She especially enjoys banging them on her tray. Sometimes I end up using 4 utensils because she collects them and won't let them go.  I have to say that part cracks me up especially when she tries to get them in her mouth all at the same time.  I think I need to try to get a picture tonight.

  • I think 9 months was around the time that we started really giving Dd table foods on a regular basis.  Banana, avocado and sweet potato cubes were early favs, and then we started adding more, but I did often keep her meals at that age to one cubed something and a puree and some fruit.  Also, ellie loved bagels, but I usually just gave her a quarter to a third of one to gnaw on and didn't break it up.  And I think she really likes bagels more as teething food that "real" food.  Just keep trying.  Also look at wholesomebabyfood.com and wholesometoddlerfood.com - they have some great recipes that are kid friendly as do onehungrymama.com and weelicious (made their cheesy broccoli orzo tonight and it was a hit.
  • M caught on pretty quickly, but I didn't really start him on table foods until he was Rachel's age  or a  little older.
  • I gave up on meal planning a while back. Jace is *very* picky. I wish I could help!
  • Katie didn't really eat table foods until about the 1 year mark.  We had family over and she was very intrigued by what all of her older nieces and nephews were eating.  It still took her another month or so after that until she really enjoyed table foods on a regular basis.

Every time I think I have the perfect go to meal for Matt - he stops eating it.

One thing I can count on 80% of the time is guacamole. Matt will eat it straight out of the container.  I figure it is good fat and a serving of veggies.
