I'm from the south and I see this kind of name everywhere. It's not my style, but it's not horrendous. I agree that Desmond is much better, and I LOVE the nickname Dax!
I am kinda country and I still hate it. It makes me think of a horse or a gun, neither of which I'd want to name my son after. I do like Clayton, though.
I know a kid (HS) names Kolton. He is a little smart aleck snot so I don't have good associations with the name!
( His parents also had the stupidity to spell it with a "K" when their last name begins with "K" also!)

"And can it be that in a world so full and busy, the loss of one weak creature makes a void in any heart, so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of vast eternity can fill it up." - Charles Dickens
The visual similarity to the word cotton is mostly why I'm not a fan of this name. However, I know a couple of Coltons and they tend to go by Colt, which is kind of cute but NMS.
colton is awful. but even worse is desmond! are u seriously going to burden your child with this awful ugly name? please dont do that to him! oh lord! blehhh! i dont mean to come off harsh but desmond is really, really bad. and u guys r white people? i get that u r trying to be trendy and trying realy realy hard to b different but desmond, even as "dax" (really? dax? come on) is just bad. go back to the drawing board before u effect this kid's life forever

I don't like it. It's too country for me and makes me think of a horse.
