Plugged duct... and nausea questions

So I think I have a plugged duct (my first ever, never had it with DD#1) those who have experienced this:

1: Can it cause nausea? Everytime I try to massage the area and extract I feel  slightly nauseous. It's really weird.

2: According to kellymom.com: "After a plugged duct or mastitis has resolved, it is common for the area to remain reddened or have a bruised feeling for a week or so afterwards" So how do you know its resolved?

Re: Plugged duct... and nausea questions

  • Eww I have had 3 clogged ducts but never mastitis. I never felt nauseous but it was extremely painful. It was bruised feeling for a couple days after I was able to get it unclogged. Take some type of pain reliver if you can. Also, pump after baby nurses, try a hot shower and massage it while you shower, and also put a warm rag over your nipple for a couple min before pumping or nursing. See if that helps. I could tell immediately when it was unclogged. The lump was gone (i could see it and feel it when it was clogged) I also was left with a white dot on my nipple. Sorry this is happening to you. I just hope it isn't mastitis.

  • I had issues with clogged ducts for the first couple months after DS was born. Th eonly time I felt sick with a plugged duct was when it was actually mastitis. Do you have fever? Does the lumpy area feel hot to the touch? You could call your doctor, describe your symptoms, and see if they suggest an antibiotic just in case it is mastitis.

The time I got mastitis, the clogged duct had been so difficult and persistent, that I actually bruised my breast from massaging to vigorously. I just couldn't get the lump to go away. And then it turned into mastitis. I took an antibiotic for the infection and started taking daily doses of Vit C and Lecithin to prevent future issues. I would say that I still felt at least a little bit of the lump in my boob for at least a week after I stopped the antibiotic. Really keep trying to get rid of the lump so you can avoid an abscess, which I think would need to be lanced (ouch).

I found that leaning leaning over a tub/sink full of warm water with epsom salts, while massaging downward, really helped. That, and massaging in the shower.

Good luck. Hope you feel better.

  • Thanks for the advice! I don't have a fever or feel sick except for when I'm working on the painful area. I don't feel a lump anymore but it's still sore so I thought it could still be there but maybe I over massaged or something! I don't know but this sucks! Thanks again for the advice ladies! I'm going to keep with hot compresses and try some of your suggestions just in case but lay off the massaging haha!

  • I got plugged ducts about every other days (one of the reasons I stopped BFing at 5 weeks - it was too much and so painful). The massaging was one of the things that helped and warm compresses.  I did feel nauseous because it was painful and uncomfortable. I would pump like crazy to keep things flowing and not back up. I never got mastitis (thank goodness) but BFing and me just don't get along.
