I think it was theSecond thing for my guys. Bananas were first. Just smash with a fork. Same with bananas. I have never been a fan of super pureed foods. I leave some texture. Cooper can easily eat a half an avocado at a sitting. If you do pieces I suggest rolling them in crushed rice krispies so they're easier to pick up.
We waited until 6 months when he could sit up and bring things to his mouth, and then gave him a slice in the peel so it was easier to hold. Still one of his favorite foods.
We started solids at 6months 2 weeks and avocado was their first food. We just mashed it up with a fork and mixed it with formula so it was pour off of the spoon.
Cut it in half, pit it, scoop out one side and mash with a fork - feed to baby. Whatevers left I added a bit of salt and ate with some rice crackers. It really was the best baby food ever.
I just mash it with a fork, then it sticks to the spoon and DD can hold her own spoon and kind of lick the avacado off. Sounds weird but she also loves when I mash it with some banana (either fresh mashed or Gerber bananas). She will eat bigger chunks now or just eat it off the spoon herself. It's great too since many restaurants we go out to have plain avacado that we can get for her and mash at the table.
Re: Avocado as a first food
I just mash it with a fork, you can add bm of formula if you want to thin it down.
My boys will share an avocado with dinner, they love them!
I'm going to make an AWESOME big brother.
With the little guy I watch, we mash it up but still leave texture, and then mix it with some cereal. He LOVES it.

ETA: we mixed it with breast milk too.
