Feta Cheese?

I can have Feta as long as it's pasteurized....right?  I've been bringing my own cheese to lunch to put on my salads then somebody questioned me. I can't remember where I read it was ok to eat some soft cheeses so long as they are pasteurized....

  • Yup, you're good.

  • I think the issue with soft cheeses, like deli meat, is the risk of listeria.

For what it's worth, I've still been occasionally having some feta or mozzarella cheese.

  • Just googled it.  It is fine as long as the ingredients say pasterized milk.

  • If it's pasteurized it should be fine.

Also, just about any post about feta cheese instantly makes me giggle.  Who else remembers the Fingernail of Feta post?

I find the soft cheeses confusing. Some sources say that as long as it is pasteurized, it's fine. But then I've read in other places that even though it is pasteurized, the process of making soft cheese makes it susceptible to listeria.

I generally just avoid the soft cheeses. But I have had fresh mozzarella a few times.

  • My Dr had given me a list of ok food.  Any cheese is fine as long as it is pasteurized.

  • All I want right now is a big bowl of tomoatoes, cucumbers, feta, a few kalamata olives, some red onion, olive oil, salt and pepper. Brings me a hariotiki right now. Wish I was back in Greece.

  • As long as it's pasturized you'll be okay, and most cheese you can buy in the US are pasturized. You pretty much have to be trying to find non-pasturized cheese.

Which means that soft cheese are good, even brie! (which is my fave)
